Newport Center 24 Hour Fitness fingerprint scanners

24 Hour Fitness fingerprint scanners

24 Hour Fitness implements fingerprint scanners

Just today I noticed that there were people in line at the 24 Hour Fitness next to Newport Center. They were in line to sign up for the Fingerprint Scanner. It seems that this technology has been around for a couple months at 24 Hour Fitness and that sadly demonstrates how often I’ve been to the gym lately. What I thought was interesting about it is that the guy at the front desk said that when December rolls around, the standard member card ID for 24 Hour Fitness won’t work anymore. This really blew my mind when I walked into the gym. The most interesting part was the idea of Identification Escalation. Several years ago the DMV’s started to require fingerprint scans for new Driver’s Licenses. That seemed odd at the time but I didn’t question it because I could see the need for increased security for such an important form of identification. But now with the idea of Exercise Gyms using biometric fingerprint scanners for entry into their clubs, it does not take the gift of prophesy to predict that other institutions will follow suit.

The thing to watch for is Gyms that have a system of allowing credit purchases of food or smoothies. This type of exercise club would open up the next step of Identification Escalation. Imagine if you were allowed to have a “tab” of protein bars or drinks at your local gym, and you paid off the balance automatically each month. Well, if a club like this used Fingerprint Scanners instead of membership cards, then the fingerprint would invariably serve the purpose of BOTH identification and purchasing intermediary.

Having a fingerprint serve as identification skips the necessity for a Universal ID Card. If people get used to using biometrics to identify themselves, then their bodies will become the ID Card. No plastic is necessary. One argument that companies like 24 Hour Fitness use in favor of biometrics is how using a fingerprint scan is more “GREEN” and creates less plastic waste.

The funny thing is that I will probably sign up to have my thumbprint scanned tomorrow. This isn’t because I necessarily look forward to where this Identification Escalation is heading. It is because I live my life so heavily on the grid that there really is no point in resisting.

Stadium Theater Armrests

Stadium Chair Armrest

Stadium Chair Armrest (retractable)

Armrests are funny things. If you are in a theater and are sitting next to a person you don’t know, who gets to use the armrest? People rarely discuss who gets to use the armrest. Oftentimes the person who is a more dominant personality will simply assume control of the armrest. This has actually happened to me before, usually by my brother. But there are other times when the retractable armrest is not used by either person. This can be on a date or some other movie outing, where two people want to get comfortable. Lifting the armrest is no subtle act. This is especially true when the couple involved are on a first date. The armrest is a barrier for intimacy so lifting it is like saying, “I want to have a more intimate experience for this film.” But if both people involved seem to be really enjoying each others’ company, then lifting the armrest shouldn’t be a major problem. Once the armrest is out of the picture, there are many directions that the couple can go. They can sit in their chairs but not have that barrier. They can hug or one can put an arm around the other. There can be some snuggling. Or all of the above can occur. Overall the Stadium Theater Armrests are an excellent invention that deserves recognition.

The interesting thing about retractable armrests is that they have the potential to multiply the fun and enjoyment factor of a movie date by several hundred percent.

The Transport of Squirrelgator

Squirrelgator in San Francisco

Squirrelgator in San Francisco with his new owner

It has been a long adventure for the pen and ink drawing of “Squirrelgator” to travel to its destination. The drawing of Squirrelgator is a larger piece of art that was based on the concept art of “Squirrelgator” for an upcoming project. Squirrelgator is a fierce forest creature that is part squirrel and part alligator. His favorite foods are acorns and people. Squirrelgator has 25 hit points. The canvas size is 20 inches by 24 inches. It was originally created in Orange County, California and needed to get to its new home in San Francisco. The problem was transport. I didn’t want to damage the piece but I also wanted to bring it with me as I traveled to San Francisco so that way it would get there in time for Mr. Henry Yuan’s house warming party. It would have taken too long to ship the painting. So I took it on the airplane. One thing my father said was, “Security is not going to let you take a scary monster like, Squirrelgator on the airplane. You won’t even make it past the TSA!”

Squirrelgator on the plane

I thought to myself, “Why would anyone be afraid of a Squirrelgator? He only has 25 hit points!” My main concern was that the staples connecting the canvas to the frame would set off the metal detectors. Another concern was that if I put the painting through the conveyor-belt detector, that it would get dirty and damaged by the rubber and greasy technology. When it finally was my turn to go through security I talked briefly with a TSA agent and told her about Squirrelgator and she said that Squirrelgator definitely needed to be scanned, but that she would provide him with a protective piece of Tupperware-like container that would make sure he didn’t get dirty. The painting went through security and then while I was putting on my boots another female TSA agent started laughing. I looked at her and took my piece of art and then she said, “Is that a Squirrelgator?” And I said, “Yes, this is indeed a Squirrelgator.” And she said, “Oh that’s cute.”

Squirrelgator after Construction

Once on the plane I wanted to sit with the piece in order to make sure it stayed safe. But the flight attendant told me that I needed to put it in the overhead bin. So I reluctantly put Squirrelgator in the bin and a gentleman was nice enough to stuff his jacket underneath the canvas to give it some extra padding and protective cushioning in the stow away area. I also had a jacket so I took it off and did the same thing. I was very worried about Squirrelgator during the flight and a girl slammed something into the overhead bin at one point and I thought, “Oh, there we go. She just ruined it.” So the entire flight was excruciating because I wanted to know if the painting had gotten ripped or torn. But to my surprise, when I opened the bin, Squirrelgator was undamaged. So I got picked up and the new owner of Squirrelgator and myself found the perfect place for him to stay on the wall and he definitely was a hit at the party. It was a long and perilous journey, but it was well worth it.
