How to make 103 dollars with your blog

103 dollar check from blogging

103 dollar check from blogging - CLICK TO ENLARGE

This is an addendum to our previous article, “How to make 25 dollars with your blog.” If you are new to blogging and need a place to start, read that article. If you are a little more comfortable with blogging and already have one cooking, then this will cover more advanced concepts.

When you monetize your blog, you will have several options for making money. You can sell products, do affiliate advertising, do adsense-style advertising, do text-links etc…The list goes on an on.

This articles only covers one thing. That’s Google AdSense advertising. I would expect that advertising through yahoo and others would be similar.

Let’s begin.

You already have a blog. You already have articles. You already have fans. You already are tracking your stats at least once a week. (preferably once per day)

The big debate is on number of ads vs traffic.

I decided to go the route of less ads. This is because I originally had a three-column site. But I changed overidon.com to have only two columns. It looks much better on small devices like an iPhone or an iPad. Also the site looks less cluttered.

I also switched from having multiple ad blocks, to having just a single area for ads on the left. That actually worked out better for me. I began to get clicks on my left ad block even though I hadn’t been posting as much.

Pop up ads annoy me. So why would I use those ads on my person site? It doesn’t make sense to do anything to your own blog that you wouldn’t enjoy on someone else’s.

I was approached by someone to do in-article text link ads. You need to be very careful when doing that. One company seemed legit but then they backed out. Another company was not legit after I did my research on them. You need to have the third eye of wisdom when accepting money from anyone.

Your blog is your baby. Remember that.

Overidon.com hasn’t been around for as long as the first post to now. In fact overidon.com has been a website of one form or another since approximately 2003.

That being said, I have had to pay for web hosting on the site since 2003. That’s racked up to about $1,000 – so I’m definitely still in the red here.

But in all fairness, overidon.com has only been a consistent blog since 2009. And I’ve spent about $400 on hosting and domain renewals since that time.

So right now, you could say I’m $297 in the hole. I am perfectly happy with that.

Making 103 dollars wasn’t easy. It took roughly 2 years of AdSense revenue to generate that money. Also, I’ve heard of sites that got in trouble with Google for breaching some point of the terms of service and then they didn’t get paid. So you really need to make sure you read the entire terms of service. Read the whole thing, cover to cover. I spent hours reading it. I also read any changes in the terms of service.

So how did I make 103 dollars with my blog?

Well, I made anywhere from two to eight dollars per month over the past couple years. I know two bucks per month isn’t a lot of money to sneeze at. But the truth is. I’d be doing this anyway, even if I didn’t have an ad. So the idea that I got next year’s hosting paid for is a very nice thing.

I told my friends to read my blog when I talked to them. If there was an article that I thought might stimulate the mind of a friend I’d tell him or her. I didn’t get business cards made till a few months ago. Most of the spreading of the word happened through facebook and word of mouth. Also google searches for keywords that appeared in my articles helped drive about 40 – 70% of the traffic, depending on the month.

If your blog is not a variety blog like mine, then you can still make money. Actually, you’ll probably make even more money than me if you choose a specific genre of information. The most important thing is that you love what you do and you’d do it even if you didn’t get paid. Trust me, that will shine through in every sentence.

People know when you’re losing emotional content momentum in an article. That will make it so you lose repeat visitors. Also, don’t steal anyone else’s content.

The main thing to know about making 103 dollars with your blog is that you need content. Overidon.com had approximately 550 posts as of August, 2011.

By having 500+ posts of good content, you will have a better chance that articles will last the test of time. If you just regurgitate what everyone else is saying, you’ll never get the hits long into the future. That’s why it is important to have original content with as much individual style, opinion, research, original photos, video content…the works. Every little bit helps.

Too much fun

I just got an old computer out of my storage unit.
It seriously is so much fun getting it working.

Here’s what’s been going down.

The computer only has a hard drive, a built in ethernet card, an old-style modem, an onboard video card and a some USB ports.

Fortunately, I had an extra keyboard and I managed to snag my USB wired mouse from my work-bag.

I bought a fresh copy of windows XP pro 3 years ago for this computer and the hard drive is 240 gigs strong. I’m only using 2 gigs so far.

The goal is to get this computer set-up so I can use it solely as a music creation workstation. My ESP-1010 soundcard should work on it. That’s granted that the soundcard isn’t burnt out from my when my last computer get zapped with bad energy from an old office.

So I took my secondary monitor from CyberTron (that’s the name of this computer) and I plugged it into the uncertain computer. I also attached my USB keyboard and Mouse.

It was hilarious because when I booted the thing, it said…”Hold up dog. I don’t even know what time it is, Snoops. NEVERMIND the date!”

So I had to input that information after giving the computer some suggestions for boot order. DATE/TIME the whole deal. The old dos screen was so much fun and it took me back to BIOS and AUTOEXEC days.

I was shocked to see that WinXP Pro actually started without a hitch. Of course, my screen resolution was 640 x 480 and my CD/DVD ROM wasn’t reading anything, both the onboard and PCI ethernet cards weren’t working, and there were absolutely no drivers on the computer.

That’s the beauty of a fresh install. I had nothing really. Just a lot of empty space.

So I doubled checked my devices to see which ethernet port was working. Neither worked. Actually I couldn’t even see the onboard ethernet port anywhere. And the PCI one had a huge question mark. The same was for the onboard card and a couple other things.

My main problem was getting on the net. I knew that once I could get a sturdy connection to the net, I’d be able to run automatic update and at least get the bare bones cooking.

Unfortunately, my ethernet ports weren’t working so when I swapped my ethernet cable it did nothing. I tried installing a psudo ethernet driver that came with windows but it didn’t work.

Then I got an idea. I remembered that I used to connect CyberTron to the internet at my parents’ house via a wireless internet USB adapter.

I was stoked because I even found the CD for my D-Link wireless USB adapter.

I knew that I needed to insert the CD first before plugging the thing in. That’s because some of these wireless usb puppies get ancy-pants whenever you try to plug the sucker in first.

But to my pleasant surprise, I found that the CD ROM was not autoplaying. That’s because when I went into MY computer, it said there was no disk inserted into the drive. Even though I knew it was physically in there.

Then I remembered that I had a USB external hard drive and cable in my desk. I grabbed it and found the drivers for the wireless network adapter and then dropped it on there.

I followed the instructions but unfortunately my bad install previously needed to be uninstalled before I could more forward. I didn’t want to futz with things too much so I just uninstalled and rebooted.

10 minutes later I was able to install the wireless internet adapter and now I’m 2 hours into the Windows Update process. Things are going well, although I won’t know for certain if the audio card works until I finish all the other updates. I’m waiting to install the audio card until everything else is perfectly operational. That way I will know if something goes wrong the card was damaged.

On a positive note, the video card is working because the resolution automatically set itself to a higher level. That’s a plus because my monitor is so small and the resolution was so low previously that I had to guess press in order to exit menus and accept operations.

We’ll see how this goes.

You all think you are so tough.com. Well, life is serious. And sometimes it’s hard to avoid the ghosts. I’m not talking about ghosts in the shell or ghosts in the machines…I’m talking about the ghosts in pacman.

These ghosts were hovering so quickly…I couldn’t get away. Why?

They are moving quickly because this was some sort of bootleg combo case. The speeds of pacman were jacked way up. Stage One is not supposed to be this hard.

I’m not going to mention the pizza parlor that had this game because I don’t want them to get in trouble. But maybe you already can tell what place this is by the other games in the beginning of the video.

This reminds me of a story, it’s a story about a puppy that was getting a blood test. But this blood test wasn’t for rabies…it was for the heart of the champion.

The puppy’s name was William Wallace. He was a Schnauzerfrom Connecticut and his owners noticed that he wasn’t burying bones in the back yard anymore. The owners felt that the New England air was perfect for a dog to breathe in all the scents of the backyard. So burying a bone and trying to find it was a healthy thing for the young dog. Also, the owners didn’t have to play with the dog while William Wallace was burying bones.

One day, William Wallace buried a bone in the back yard. It was a milk bone. The puppy buried the bone, but two weeks later the bone wasn’t there. The bone had turned into the ghosts from pacman and I hate that bootleg garbage.

Miss Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant

Value Town - Seal of Approval

Miss Saigon – Value Town certified!

Once a week, my girlfriend and I get a craving for Pho.  There’s only one place in SF we trust to give us ultimate value.  Miss Saigon’s prices are excellent (average of $7 per dish) and the staff is very courteous.  The place is kept very clean and our food is usually served within 10 minutes of ordering.  The food is delicious and the portions are perfect.  I never leave hungry.  They are open 7 days a week so any day can be value town Pho for me.

Since we typically drive to eat, having free parking is a big plus.  The first few times we came here, we would park at a metered spot and I’d have to put in $2 to cover our time there.  The most annoying thing was always having to find quarters to fill the meter.  There were occasions where I had to exchange for quarters in the restaurant and run back to the parking spot to pay the meter.

So in typical value town fashion, I looked around for free parking and both Minna Street/Natoma Street have free parking.  The best thing about these spots is that they are a 1 hour limit so there is almost always a spot open.  I’d say I’m 10 for 10 in my last 10 visits.  Actually, we started going here so often that we have been upgraded to “VIP” status with a free desert after every meal.  We noticed all the regulars get free deserts brought to them.  They don’t bring out the same desert either.  We’ve had three of four different types of deserts, all ranging from a taste of red bean to coconut.  My advice is if you start visiting here, chit chat with the staff and let them know how much you enjoyed their service/food at the end of your meal.  You’ll be on the quick track to VIP status!

The only knock I can give Miss Saigon is the location.  It’s located in the Tenderloin, which isn’t the nicest district in San Francisco.  You’ll frequently see homeless people walking around yelling in the street for no apparent reason.  That being said, I still feel safe walking around the area.  I’ve never been harassed by any of the street dwellers as of yet.

As I write this, my mouth is watering thinking about their Pho and Thai iced tea.  They value town the drinks here as well.  As you’ll see in the image below, the Thai iced tea drink glasses are HUGE!  Look how big my smile is.  That’s genuine happiness folks.  Next time you’re in San Francisco, stop by Miss Saigon for a value town meal – you won’t be disappointed.  They are located at 100 6th Street.

ALSO: Miss Saigon has a new website – http://www.misssaigonsf.com that is optimized for portable devices. You can now order your favorite meals via your smartphone, laptop, desktop or even your tablet! Enjoy!
