Understanding Desalination

Russian Desalination Plant

Have you ever heard the term “Desalination” before? This is becoming a hot topic (pun intended) for populations and their growing drinking water needs. In a nutshell, Desalination means taking the salt and unwanted minerals and materials out of either sea water or other water. This process requires heavy machinery and infrastructure as well as a great deal of energy. But making drinkable or “potable” water is extremely important because many rivers and wells for getting fresh water have either been exhausted or have become polluted. Desalination is a also a way for countries that have access to ocean water but are basically deserts to get drinking water. There are several methods for desalination but the basic process is that water is heated up and the steam is collected. The collected steam condenses and then becomes drinking water. The primary way that desalination occurs today is a method called Multi-Stage Flash Distillation CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE. Desalination is often combined with power generation. This means that the excess energy produced by a power plant would be used to give energy to a nearby desalination plant. This process is called Cogeneration.

Desalination is a technology that needs to be worked on and advanced if we are going to satisfy growing water consumption needs in California and Worldwide. I predict that water usage and disputes over water rights will become a major point of contention in regions like eastern Asia and Asia Minor. Wars in the near future probably won’t be fought over oil or land rights, but rather for water. Desalination technology could be used to diffuse tensions and quench the thirst of growing countries, like China. The reason why more focus needs to be put on desalination is because the main byproduct of desalination, SALT, is extremely toxic if not dealt with properly. Changing the salt content of regions of the ocean can cause fish to die. So more effort needs to be put into perfecting desalination technology if we want it to be a solution for our water needs.

Desalination technology can be extremely profitable. Right now California is working on a large desalination plant near San Diego. The drinkable water produced by this plant will be able to be sold to other communities. Since water resources are going to become more scarce as populations grow, especially in California, then it would make sense that the price of water will rise. So investing in desalination plants may be a good idea. I definitely would rather live in a community that was able to generate its water supply, rather than relying on some other community for my water.

Overidon Laptop is Up and Running Again

Filed under: Overidon News — Tyler @ 10:50 pm

Fortunately, the Overidon Laptop is up and running again! Big thanks to Device Repair for replacing the hard drive and installing Windows 7. They did a great job. Now I am running Windows 7 and it is quite faster than Windows Vista on this computer. One thing that I noticed is that Windows 7 uses these interesting transparent windows. When I click on the Start Button it looks pretty similar to Vista except that the right hand side of the window is translucent and I can see the window behind it. It is a really nice perk because you always have an idea of what you’re looking at. Also when I hover the icons on the taskbar, I can see small previews of the programs that are running. So when I hover over the Mozilla Firefox icon, I can see this post that I’m writing right now, and also my Facebook page. And I can easily select which window I want to view. Minimizing and maximizing and restoring windows is much easier now. By simply dragging the top of a window to the top of the screen, Windows automatically thinks that I want to maximize. It’s pretty amazing and very intuitive.

In order to get the wireless working again since I forgot my wireless password, I had to hard-reset my router. The router came with this graphically intense software for the Linksys. I remember when we first set it up, it took literally over an hour to install and configure the software, maybe even two hours. But this time I didn’t even have to install the software from the CD in order to get it to work. The router came with built in, web based software that I was able to access by being plugged into the thing and entering 192.168.1.1 into my browser. It didn’t take long at all to get back online. And this time I made sure to keep the wireless password information in a place where I remember.

It’s going to take a while to install all the software that I had originally on this laptop. But at least now I have a 500 gig hard drive to store data. Before I only had a 150 gig hard drive and that was barely enough. I’m not exactly sure how my old hard drive got bad sectors. But I am going to make sure to back up my data often in order to avoid problems.

California Unemployment is reaching alarming levels

California Unemployment from 2004-2009 has skyrocketed

California Unemployment Rate SOURCE: California Employment Development Department

California Unemployment as of April 2010, is a whopping 12.6%! That is a huge number. If you think about it, one in every ten people who are California Residents are out of a job. From the looks of the graph to the left, it doesn’t look like this trend is going down anytime soon either. What are some of the causes for this? Well, one major cause that I see everyday when I walk down the street or visit shopping malls would be how stores are constantly closing. I’ve noticed a great deal of stores being closed in malls like Irvine Spectrum and an even higher amount of closings at The Block in Orange. When stores close, people loose their jobs. But store closings are often related to business and retailers unable to pay for their leases or monthly rent. When stores don’t make enough money for their business to be profitable they are either forced to relocate to less expensive locations, or close all together. Now, some business are designed on bad business models and are doomed to failure, but others are good businesses that are hit by the hard economic times. It doesn’t take too much analysis to realize that if people are loosing their jobs, then they will be less likely to purchase things that aren’t completely necessary or on the top of their “wants” list. This drop in spending in turn causes stores to get less foot traffic and some eventually close, which in turn means employees of those stores loose their jobs. When you take into account that our National Debt is growing every day, and that our money is loosing purchasing power due to inflation, the situation for California’s economy seems pretty grim.

So where is California’s Unemployment situation heading? My guess is that we are moving toward an obviously stratified society. What I mean by this is that California will have different levels of wealth and jobs that will become so clearly differentiable by earning potential, that it will almost seem like California will have some sort of Caste system. Has anybody else besides me noticed how many people with Masters Degrees work retail or at coffee shops like Starbucks? Something is happening to our economy. And it is going to get even worse. People will have to struggle to even get entry level jobs because of competition. And it seems that computer and robotic automation of jobs is just sucking up even more employment. Only the jobs that are too complex for computers and robots to do are available for people.

I predict that soon, not having a job will become very normal. People will just move in with family members or quadruple up in rooms and live as long as they can via income from the state. We are already seeing people of all ages go back to school. I took a math class a few months ago at OCC and the class was PACKED with people. Some people think that the economy is going to bounce back and that housing prices will give things a boost. I really doubt it. I think our economy is basically staring itself in the face and realizing that it has serious restructuring to do.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing a new kind of poverty. Not poverty where you see tons of people on the street, but a poverty where people exist on very little money per day and yet they still have cell phones. I imagine a kind of wierd lower class where people don’t appear to be poor by their clothing or acessories, they in fact have lots of stuff, but they just don’t make very much money.

Computer Problem Mystery

Filed under: Overidon News — Tyler @ 9:39 pm

So it seems I spoke too soon in my previous article about how I “Solved My Computer Problems.” I rebooted the computer, was able to blog yesterday, and even got to play a few hours of the awesome game, “Master of Magic.” Everything was going great so I went to sleep around 2AM this morning thinking of giant Stag Beetles crawling around and breathing fire on enemy villages and unsuspecting heroes. But when I woke up and ate breakfast and turned on my computer, I had the exact same loading problem that I had yesterday and the day before! I was really perplexed by the mystery of what was wrong with my computer. And I exhausted most of my ideas on what might be the problem. I had already run and anti-virus scan, I updated most of my drivers except I wasn’t able to update my video card drivers. I also already ran disk cleanup and disk defrag, so I was running out of ideas. Then I got the idea that maybe I could use “System Restore” to restore my computer to a previous state and it was my hope that using a previous system restore point would fix my computer.

Well I ran System Restore and it took about 45 minutes to complete the process on my laptop. And guess what happened? My computer took forever to load and when it finally got to the desktop screen with the sidebar thing, my computer kept accessing my hard drive over and over again. And I wasn’t even able to do something simple like deleting a program shortcut on the desktop. At this point I became frustrated and a bit worried that I was starting to do more damage to my computer than good. So I decided to take my computer down to friends at Device Repair. It was really a bummer having to take my computer in to get fixed. For me, taking a computer into the shop is like having a lung removed so it can be repaired. I can live without it temporarily, but I sure miss it a lot. Right now I am writing this article on my mom’s computer. That’s the cool thing about using WordPress to make a blog. Oftetimes you can write your posts from anywhere that you can jump on the internet. Using someone else’s computer is kind of wierd. You don’t have all your bookmarks, and you have to type in the password for everything. On my computer I have the websites that I use most often loaded onto my Firefox toolbar that is at the top of the browser. Little things like that only speed up the process by a second or so, but when you think about it, adding a bookmark that you use multiple times per internet session into the toolbar can end up saving you several hours over the course of a year or so. It all depends on how much you use the computer.

Starbase 375

Starbase 375 from Deep Space 9

So something funny and cool happened to me when I went to Starbucks today. I ordered a Venti Iced Caramel Macchiato because it was hot out. And then the cool girl who I know who was the barista asked me how my day was going. I told her that I was kind of bummed out because my computer was having problems. And then she said, “I thought you fixed your computer already?” And then I thought to myself in surprise, “How does she know this? Is she psychic?” But then she said that she read about my computer on my blog. And I thought that that was really cool! I know that I get a lot of people who read this blog around the world, in places like Canada and Australia and The United Kingdom and here in Newport Beach. But it was very fun to have someone know something about me before telling them personally.

So now it is up to the computer masters at Device Repair to solve the mystery of what’s wrong with my computer. Until it is fixed it looks like I will be will be blogging from alternate computers. Right now I know how it must have felt for the crew of Star Trek Deep Space 9 when they got kicked off their space station and had to coordinate their strategic planning from Starbase 375. It was a interesting time in the show because you got to see the crew adapt to a new base of operations and they didn’t have all the comforts of home.
