Catmancer - click to enlarge

In New York I created several new monsters. These monsters are going to eventually be used in my new game. If you look to the left there is a picture of the very dangerous monster named, “Catmancer.” He is not to be trifled with. Catmancer does serious magic damage to anyone who confronts him. He also is so powerful that he can communicate with you during your dreams. He likes to do that in order to test your psychological mettle and see if you are going to be a worthy adversary. Catmancer is extremely intelligent and knows many spells.  Catmancer is equipped with a wizards hat, cape, and magic wand. He was trained by powerful wizards who lived in ancient temple ruins. Battle Catmancer with care.

The Corona del Mar Starbucks UPGRADED its Bathroom

Starbucks Corona del Mar - Bathroom UPGRADED

Starbucks Corona del Mar - Bathroom UPGRADED

The Starbucks in Corona del Mar UPGRADED its Bathroom! This is awesome news because the Corona del Mar Starbucks had an OK bathroom before but it wasn’t super inviting. But now it has new tile on the walls and it looks like the walls have a sort of line-based texture. It kind of looks like the walls are covered in ivory corduroy. The whole look has been polished and cleaned up. It is a much friendlier looking bathroom now. Before the tile was pretty boring. Now there is a sort of layered look to it. The toilet is the same but it looks nice in its new backdrop. There are still the same amenities that one would expect to see in a Starbucks bathroom, like seat covers, soap dispenser and towel dispenser. The whole feel of the bathroom is, “Fresh.” It seems refreshing and relaxing. Before it had a cold and uninviting look to it. But now the bathroom at the Corona del Mar Starbucks is much better.

A clean and comfortable bathroom is a major plus to any coffee based establishment. I’ve been to coffee shops that don’t have immediate access to bathrooms and I get nervous. Are you sure you want to serve caffeinated beverages and milk products and not offer a bathroom nearby? That’s a recipe for disaster on multiple proportions. A coffee shop is often evaluated for the whole package, not just the coffee. A good coffee shop has great coffee, friendly staff, comfortable seating, clean lobby area, optional snacks and a nice bathroom. Even people that just come in for their coffee to go evaluate the overall niceness of the entire store. But when the bathroom is looking good, it is a sure-fire sign that the coffee shop is being managed well. The Corona del Mar Starbucks always does a great job of keeping their bathroom clean and the baristas are quick to fix it up whenever it is having issues.

The main difference I noted with the Corona del Mar Starbucks bathroom was that the walls were different. That’s what really stuck out at me. Walls are important because they define the space and depth perception on an enclosed environment. For example, a bathroom with large mirrors on all the walls would make the space seem much larger than it really is. This technique is used in the dining area of the Cheesecake Factory in Irvine Spectrum. There is a wall that is almost entirely a mirror, and it makes the space seem huge and almost daunting. When I first walked to our booth, I was thinking, “How are they able to serve so many seats and still provide good service?” Then I realized that there was a huge mirror and the room was half the size that I originally perceived it to be and then I had a chuckle. “Silly me,” I thought, “I got tricked by the interior designer!”

The interesting thing about the walls in the Corona del Mar Starbucks is that they have an interesting texture. That is intriguing to me because things with interesting textures usually make people want to touch them. But I think the last thing anyone should do is touch the walls of a Starbucks bathroom. That is a bad idea. More people traverse those places than a Mos Eisley Space Port on New Year’s.

A funny thing about how the bathroom came to my attention. I didn’t experience it of my own accord. One of the baristas said to me, “Have you checked out our new bathroom?” And I said, “No, is it different?” And he said, “Yeah, you should go check it out!” And I paused for a second. This is because my self-preservation instincts usually make me second guess any suggestions or invitations to public restrooms for any reason. But I trusted the Barista who told me about the upgraded bathroom. And I am glad I checked it out because people should know about how nice the tile was in there!

I actually had fun watching baseball today

Baseball and Rice

Baseball and Rice

I actually had fun watching baseball today. And it was ON TV, not even live. What happened was that I was eating sushi and the Kura Sushi Revolving Sushi Bar. I was eating alone because I was just there to have some sushi and bring some home to my parents. And I just randomly picked a comfortable spot next to this elderly couple and they seemed nice so I sat by them. But what was interesting is that I ended up smack in front of the Flat Screen TV. Usually I despise TV’s in restaurants and places like Gas Stations. But I was enjoying myself watch the sushi revolve and so I had nothing better to do than look at the TV. There was a baseball game on the TV. I can’t remember what teams were playing. But one of the players was really dirty. I deduced that he had tried to slide into home base or maybe he was looking for his chewing tobacco in the dirt. Regardless, it made the game more exciting seeing someone with dirt all over him. Then the game focused on the pitcher. This was cool because most of the time when I go to Baseball game in person I seem to look at everybody all over the field. But on TV you are pretty much forced to look at the pitcher. One cool thing was that the catcher was giving intricate and amusing hand signals to the pitcher, in his groin area. I knew catchers did this but the actual signals eluded me.

At first I thought the hand signals were for specific types of pitches. But after a while I got the idea that the signals were just for fun and to encourage the pitcher. At one type the catcher gave a signal WITH JAZZ HANDS. The whole thing was fun. Another entertaining thing was trying to figure out which comes first in the stats, “BALLS” or “STRIKES?” It only took me a minute or so to figure out which one was which because the one number got up to three and the guy was still batting. Don’t ask me which one comes first now because I forgot already.

One thing that I noticed was that neither team seemed very enthusiastic. I know this isn’t Pro Wrestling or anything but a little more excitement might have made the whole game more entertaining. One guy struck out and kind of just walked away like, “Well there you go,” sort of attitude. The most energy I noticed on the faces of players was when a player was on a base trying to steal another base. That really got my attention. One dude looked like he was trying to catch an early bus on a rainy day in San Francisco. Man he ran fast.

The whole experience made me change my opinion of TV’s in restaurants. Maybe these TV’s have a function to entertain people, especially if they are dining alone. But one thing that I realized was that the TV definitely gave me something to do, so I didn’t need to initiate a conversation with any of my neighbors to have a pleasant time. I just talked to my servers from time to time and watched baseball. And when I was bored of that or it was a commercial, I just watched the Sushi travel like little sailboats on winding river. So maybe all this visual entertainment comes at the expense of social interaction.

Overall, I’d say that the TV and Baseball game at the restaurant was more of a guilty pleasure. They detract from the purity of the place, yet at the same time make the environment a little more casual and light.

I love experiences that challenge or contradict opinions that I have. There is something noteworthy anytime one gets a chance to reevaluate his or her behavior. Does this mean I’m going to seek out places that have TV’s? Not necessarily. But I think I will be a little slower to judge whenever a restaurant decides to have a TV in their bar area.
