Black Cube White Cube

On a hot and sunny day, which box would you choose? And why?

Imagine it is a hot and sunny day. A friend of yours says that he has a gift certificate for a full tank of gasoline and he wants to give it to you.

“What’s the catch?” You ask.

He says, “The catch is that in order to receive your full tank of gasoline…I need you to sit in a box for 15 minutes.”

You look outside, “I see two boxes in a field.”

“Yes, you only need to sit in one of those large 11 x 11 x 11 foot cubes for 15 minutes. So you’ll need to choose which box you’d like to sit in.”

You ask a question, “What are these boxes made out of?”

“Metal.”

“They don’t look metallic,” You say.

He then responds by saying, “Both cubes are made out of thin sheet-metal. One is painted black on its exterior. And one is painted white on its exterior. But both boxes are painted grey on the inside.”

“Will you close the door after me?”

“Yes I will close the door after you. But there is no lock, so you can leave at any time. Although if you leave before I open the door for you at the 15 minute mark…I will not give you the gasoline gift card.”

After inspecting the black cube and the white cube, you observe how your friend was telling the truth. They appear to be identical in size and shape, only the color of their exteriors differ. Also, you notice that neither cube block sunlight in any way for their counterpart cube. So neither cube gets the net effect of a shadow.

You think for a moment…your car does guzzle a great deal of gasoline. Also, your friend is trust-worthy and you don’t think he’ll bar the door and/or evacuate the air from the cubes. So you make up your mind on which box you choose to sit in for 15 minutes on this hot summer day.

What is your choice? And more importantly, why?

[there is no right or wrong answer]

The Myth of Solid State non Defragmentation

Filed under: Observations — Tyler @ 1:48 pm
Solid State Drive

Contrary to a popular rumor, solid state hard drive can still get fragmented

Contrary to popular belief, solid state drives (SSD’s) can become fragmented. This is counter-intuitive because most new machines which use solid state drives often show the information, “Never been run.” Since new SSD’s don’t fragment very easily, most users won’t need to run defrag on their Solid State Drive systems for the first few months of owning their new computers.

Yet if you have your windows operating system running on a solid state, you might want to consider running defrag analysis on your drive. In all likelihood, regular updates, restore points and other normal program operation including temporary files etc…has fragged your hard drive a few percentage points.

Although the picture shows 2% fragmentation for my C: drive, you should know when I first ran the test a couple months ago I fragged my C: drive over 10%. And as you already know, 10% can cause some acute slowdown on general tasks.

So if you ever hear anyone say, “Oh, you don’t need to run defrag on your solid state hard drive.” Let them know that SSD’s actually can get fragged. And they just probably have only experienced a new hard drive and haven’t used their system long enough to frag it.

The Animals of Pasadena

Filed under: Observations — Tyler @ 6:20 pm

Many animals live in Pasadena. I’ve encountered lots of cats, squirrels and racoons. One raccoon and one squirrel in particular seem to love the wooden fence in our area. They act as sorts of guardians. Sometimes, when I want to go to the gym at night, they stare at me. Maybe they are waiting for the “all clear” and that’s just how raccoons communicate safety knowledge (by staring contests).

Overall it is very nice having animal neighbors. They add a great deal of randomness and interactivity to what may normally be a predictable day. That’s the beauty of not living in a vacuum.

Here’s a little video showing one of the squirrels in our area.

power of memes at the 99 cent store

Filed under: Observations — Tyler @ 11:03 pm
thnx for the nice

thnx for the nice

So I was at the 99 cent store a couple weeks ago…trying to buy some coconut water. And I was paying with coins.

Why did I pay with coins? Well, I pay with change at the 99 cent store cuz I collect coins and that means I pay with cash alot. That means I have a great deal of unwanted coins lying around. These are mostly the ones that are of more recent years.

So anyway, I’m paying and counting my coins for coconut water and bandaids for my toe because I need to walk around town all the time in order to walk off my true emotions…and as I walk away a woman says to a stranger in line, “That’s like that commercial about the credit card and the guy’s paying with cash it it’s all slow…” Then the guy listening is just nodding from what I could see from the corner of my eye.

Yeah, thanks meme.

You just enabled someone to meme-mock me without even directly addressing my specific situation. Why? Because I wasn’t even paying with cash. I paid in coins. These were hard-earned coins.

I really don’t mind getting made fun of all the time. At least I found a 1954 quarter…I’m goona one day make a 1954 surfboard and give it to green lantern to sell to silver surfer for a big markup. Then he can use that money to pay someone to make a design of a machine that makes liquid nitrogen out of air. And then we can sell that liquid nitrogen and really get the ball rolling. Once we sell enough liquid nitrogen to eletromagnet companies I want to invest in the same company that owns her credit card. Then I’m going to send her a new credit card that replaces her name with, “MEME-MASTER.”
