The battle for purification rages on

Klavixar is a wizard from the land of Mirror who was exiled by the Draconians for being a pacifist. He eventually made friends with a band of nomads who found his wisdom to be quite excellent. The nomadic tribes told Klavixar that he should feel welcome in their humble village of Utica, and that although he was an inexperienced wizard he may prove useful in the long term. When the nomads of Utica wanted to conquer nearby hamlets and villages, Klavixar recommended peace. And luckily for the nomads, their relaxation within their wall-less township made returning to defend it, realistic and easy. Many years later, Klavixar was approached by a sage named Zaldron. He said that he could assist Klavixar in researching spells that could be used for changing the terrain surrounding Utica.

The research process was painstaking and the librarians withing Utica were exhausted. Unrest started to spread across Utica, so Klavixar decided to build Temples and Parthenons in order to let the population express their spirituality and devotion. This was a time of great tranquility and the nomads prospered. Eventually their population swelled enough to lead a caravan of settlers.

Around the time the new nomadic outpost was established, two wizards presented themselves to Klavixar. One was named Ariel, the other was Sharee. Ariel was a leader that completely focuses on life magic. Since Klavixar studied life magic, sorcery and nature magic, he felt she would be an excellent trade ally and friend. So they traded their spells freely and enjoyed each others’ company.

But Ariel and her Orc and Barbarian citizens grew restless and they expanded their empire. Eventually Ariel decided that instead of trading magic, she could attain what she wanted by stealing the spells from Klavixar’s mind itself.

Ariel began regular raids of Utica. But Klavixar knew that if he could just hold on to Utica and the new hamlet…then his Sage, Zaldron may grow wiser with experience.

Battle after battle, many units were lost. Horse-bowmen fell in combat, priests gave their lives…the future looked grim. But wave after wave, Zaldron and a few soldiers survived.

Eventually, Zaldron became an adept sage and through his diligence, Klavixar was able to change the lands to make Utica into a paradise. The population flourished and powerful Griffons were trained in fantastic stables. Zaldron was able to repel the new attacks with the new support.

Meanwhile, the wizard, Sharee entered into an alliance with Ariel. She used Chaos and Death magic to summon zombies and doom bats to punish Klavixar for not bowing and scraping to Ariel. But the last straw was when Sharee created a new village withing the territory of Utica.

Klavixar sent a huge force of rangers and griffons to attack the southern village of Halflings. And with the success of that battle. Klavixar now controlled 3 cities.

A huge academic breakthrough at the Sage’s Guild enabled Klavixar to use the spell of prosperity on his cities. This made profits from taxation/production quite lucrative. And since he was an alchemist, Klavixar was able to convert the new gold into magical power reserves. This offset the mana cost of the prosperity spells on each village.

Even though Klavixar had three cities, and felt strong. His nemesis, Ariel controlled dozens of cities and towns. Fearing that he needed to become more aggressive in Arcanus politics, Klavixar decided to summon a powerful hero.

After spending years in channeling enough energy to summon a true hero of the people…his dreams were finally answered. Out from his magic portal, emerged…RoboCop-The Paladin. RoboCop was a young Paladin from a strange land called, “Old Detroit” but his innate talents showed much promise. He was immune to magic, had superhuman might, his prayers could inspire allies in battle, he was agile, and he was a famous celebrity back where he came from.

Klavixar knew that this young Paladin needed to grow strong. So he let him train and defend Utica from the advances of Ariel and Sharee time and time again. RoboCop learned much and his skills grew.

Meanwhile, Klavixar was crafting the finest in weapons and armour for RoboCop. He made him a sword called the ED209-Cobra. It added +3 to Attack and +3 to hit as well as giving RoboCop a blessing and the strength of a giant. Each hit from this sword had a chance to dispel any form of evil. RoboCop trained with the sword but did not enter into combat until he received his armor. This armor was crafted by OCP and made RoboCop virtually impervious to bow and arrow attacks. This was amazing because RoboCop-The Paladin was already invulnerable to Magic Attacks. The armor was golden platemail and increased his defense by eight. With the OCP armour, he could move an additional 5 paces with each turn. This made him formidable enough to bring the fight to his enemies.

RoboCop-The Paladin lead an army of griffons and a ranger unit as well as some priests to conquer some sorcery nodes in the area. The battles were not difficult but it gave Klavixar enough time to craft RoboCop his final item. It was his orb of the Fourth Directive, this made him fly with the spirit of the People. The Fourth Directive also gave him extra damage and accuracy. Overall these three items made Robocop quite confident.

His army attacked and conquered a city in the Northeast. Many griffons and rangers were lost. And all the priests died. But some griffons and RoboCop survived. And the city became a stronghold that welcomed the young Paladin. RoboCop was ready to settle down in this Halfling city and train an army of Slingers. But other problems came to his attention.

Back near Utica, Sharee was constantly corrupting the countryside. The nomads were unable to farm on this defiled territory. So they had to train priests who could purify the land.

Yet Ariel and Sharee were allied now against Klavixar and they constantly sent regiments to kill the priests and any units that tried to protect the purification process. Zaldron feared leaving the capital because of the incessant attacks of dangerous monsters like Doom Bats and even Ariel’s bloodthirsty unicorns.

Hearing the news from a griffon courier, RoboCop left the leader of the Griffon regiment in charge of the Halfling city and went Southwest. His mission: To protect the noble priests as they purified the land of the corruption.

Little did RoboCop know…that he had to face a fearsome army of Invulnerable Stag Beetles, Wizards, and even Orc Wyverns. The ensuring battle would be treacherous. And this is the detailed account of the perilous engagement…of the Hero of the People…against the Stag Beetle Army!

RoboCop is a rad comic book/movie that I recommend you watch.

Defeat the Ligar in Rygar

The game Rygar for the NES is very challenging, but there are some tips that can help you defeat the Ligar (final boss) and his minions. I actually beat this game about 7 years ago. But I am replaying it again because it is so great. The first thing to realize about Rygar is that this side scrolling action/adventure game has RPG elements. But the RPG elements are very subtle and you wouldn’t guess them if you just picked the game up without a FAQ or previous experience. What you need to know is that when you press start you get some good information. The first thing to notice are two numbers that are called, “TONE” and “LAST.” What those numbers represent is almost a kill counter for enemies you have dispatched. And it counts almost like “EXP” in a traditional RPG. The more kills you get, the higher the numbers. The higher the “TONE” number, the more damage you do per attack of your flying disk weapon. The higher your “LAST” number, the more HP you have and the higher your defensive rating becomes. So it is extremely important to kill monsters as much as you can, because it directly correlates to your damage potential and your survivability.

The problem that many people have in the beginning of the game is that lots of monsters take multiple hits with the “Diskarmor” to be destroyed. Well there is an easy solution to this that makes Rygar one of the most fun action/adventure games of all time.

When you are in the first area, you should see lots of little turtle looking dudes and rolling red pill bug monster thugs. Despite how dull it may seem, kill as many of these as you can by walking back and forth till the sprites reappear on the screen. But all the while, be on the lookout for golden stars appearing where the dead monsters were. If you get walk on top of the stars, or successfully attack them with your diskarmor, you will receive a “MAGIC” point. Also you will hear a pleasant and rewarding sound whenever you collect a star. So to make sure you have a point of “MAGIC” press the start button and look in the “MIND” section. “MIND” equivalent to “MAGIC” in other games.

Once you have collected 3 MIND points, look to the right of the “start” screen. You should see three options under the “POTENTIAL” heading. They are: “POWER UP”, “ATTACK and ASSAIL” and “RECOVER.” So make sure the arrow in pointing at POWER UP and then when you have 3 MIND points press either “A” or “B” I can’t remember. You should notice that your 3 MIND points are gone now. This means you are now powered up like a champ.

Now press start again and play the game. Notice how fast you are attacking and how awesome your weapon is. This is the only way to play. It will make killing enemies much easier and it makes farming up kills enjoyable. The cool thing is that you only can power up once until you die or else after a very long time in the game. I’ve played for 10 minutes without needing to power up again. But if you notice that your diskarmor weapon is swinging slowly, go ahead and farm up 3 MIND points and try to use the POWER UP potential. That should get you back to normal.

Another MUST-HAVE ability is the RECOVER potential. This skill requires 7 MIND points but it refills your health bubbles to the max. So this should be major encouragement for you to farm up TONE and LAST from creature kills, because the LAST number affects the amount of Health Bubbles you have. So the RECOVER ability technically increases in value as the game progresses, if you’ve been fighting a lot of monsters.

The RECOVER ability is great because if you know you are near a boss. You can use your RECOVER to fill up your Health. And then you can fight normal monsters nearby by walking back and forth, until you collect 7 more MIND points from stars. This way, you can use the RECOVER potential during the boss fight once you drop to low health.

There never is a time when you shouldn’t be POWER UP with your diskarmor. Since that ability only costs 3 MIND points there is no excuse to not have it prepped all the time.

The other ability is called, ATTACK and ASSAIL potential. This is a sort of kill everything on the screen, or at least damage everything ability. I personally don’t use this one unless there is an emergency of lots of little monsters that are about to kill me and I don’t have enough MIND points to use RECOVER. This ATTACK and ASSAIL skill uses 5 MIND points. The downside is that you can only use this skill 10 times, and I am not sure if this counts if you die and continue or if it is reset when you die. Overall, this skill should be used in emergencies only.

Speaking of dying, Rygar is a game where you need to adventure and explore the map to a great extent. Don’t be afraid of dying. If you die you can continue by pressing “START” again, even though it doesn’t say “Continue” if you hit start you will have all your Health Bubbles (although only 3 will be full) and you should have your items as well. You also start at the beginning of the area you are currently in. So this means if you are exploring and you accidentally get to a place where you are stuck because you didn’t listen to a bald guru dude and ventured without a grappling hook, it is no big deal because you can just jump to your doom in the water/river/bottomless pit…you get the idea. Just don’t forget to farm up 3 MIND points and get that weapon of yours POWERED UP.

Here’s a hint to playing Rygar that will make your experience quite enjoyable. There are many maps and FAQ’s available that will assist you in navigating the game. I recommend that you do not use these maps at all. Now you may be thinking that the game will be easier and less frustrating if you use a map but it is actually the opposite. Getting lost and exploring parts of the game without the proper tools and information is the most fun part. If you venture far into a stage and get to an impasse, imagine all the experience you’ve gained toward your TONE and LAST statistics. This is making you a much stronger warrior and the boss battles will be more fun and reasonable because of your hard work.

Also, if you play the game without maps and FAQ’s, you will learn the layout of stages, so this will improve your memorization skills and will truly make you a better warrior in real life. Because let’s face it: Everyone plays NES games because they want to be an effective warrior at some future period. If you don’t want this reality for your life then play something 3D that was made later than 1997.

Here’s a hint that is downright awesome. The game of Rygar has many hidden ledges that are actually off-screen. So once you get the grappling hook, if you feel stuck, try grappling overhead and see if you are able to grab ahold of a ledge or platform above you.

Another must-know tip is that the “Pulley” item is very tricky. You will notice in the overworld map there are rivers with white lines connecting two landmasses together. Well, once you get the grappling hook and the pulley items then you can traverse these lines. This is because they are actually Zip-Lines/ropes. They can be very frustrating at first. You need to walk near them, sometimes having the zip-line right above your head is the way to get them to activate. Once you successfully latch on, you should hear a metallic “pa-chink!” sound. This means you are connected and you should be able to move up and down on the line freely.

You can also connect to Zip-Lines in the 2D action areas. They may appear in certain areas over a bottomless pit. The way to get onto these is to simply walk straight into the line. Don’t jump into it or get sassy with it. Just walk right in as if you didn’t have a care in the world. And your faith will connect you the right path.

Getting of a zip-line / rope is easy. Just simply ride the line until it runs out and you will do a small jump to safe ground.

Remember, it is easy to fall into the water and die on the overworld map. So be prepared to swear at the screen repeatedly as you get this routine down. Honestly, getting the knack of the overworld zip-line stuff is the hardest and most tedious part of the whole game. Everything else is pure enjoyment.

Later in the game you will acquire a crossbow item. I think you need to select it from the item screen when you press “start.” You do so by moving right and left with the directional pad. Once selected, experiment by pressing A or B and other stuff and see if you can get the item to work in the situation you want it to. I’m not going to get into a tremendous amount of detail what to do with this stuff here because you need to listen to the bald GURU dudes who live in the shrines/caves. If you actually read what they say, you will be able to apply their wisdom and use your items accordingly.

But just so you know, the grappling hook is the first important item that you need to get in order to get to any of the bosses. And in order to get the grappling hook, you need to walk the long way around the overworld outskirts and check literally every cave. Then you will finally meet a guru who will hook you up. Don’t forget to say thanks to him by jumping in the air and saluting with your diskarmor (this actually does nothing but a warrior would salute at this point).

The Ligar is the last boss in the game Rygar. You want to make sure you have a lot of health bubbles before you fight him.

This is a guide on how to win at Yo! Noid for the NES. It is dedicated to my friend Ryan. This game is a 2D side scrolling platformer. It may seem like a cheesy low budget game at first glance. But after playing it for the past couple months off-and-on, I’ve come to hold a great deal of respect for this fast paced game. Yo! Noid does not in any way allow the player to “Go Easy” on his or herself. You need to be alert and thinking ahead every step of the way. If you are the kind of player who is good at dodging enemies, you will need to use those skills to survive. If you are an aggressive player that likes to rack up points, you will need that personality as well in order to maintain your score and get extra lives. And believe me, you will need all the extra lives you can get. Do you remember in Batman Begins when the main bad guy was training Bruce Wayne at the frozen lake? There was a part where he said to Bruce Wayne, “Mind your surroundings, Bruce.” You will need to heed that advice for Yo! Noid.

Instead of giving you a complete walkthrough of the entire game, read on to have the skills you need in order to be victorious in Yo! Noid In the first couple stages, you will notice that there are strange blocks that float around with roman numeral, “II” or “III” on them. Also, you may see an exclamation mark floating around as well. If you pick these up and survive to an odd numbered stage, you will get to a pizza eating contest with an enemy Noid. The evil Noid will always go first. If you pick a higher numbered pizza than the enemy noid then you will eat the difference of the pizzas. If you use one of those roman numeral things then the amount of pizzas you will have eaten will be multiplied by either “2x” or “3x” depending on whether or not you choose a “II” or “III” pizza modifier. The most important thing to know about this is that if you are able to fill up all the pizza slots and not let the enemy Noid eat a single slice, then you will not only recieve 100,000 bonus points. (You only need 200,000 points to get a free life) You will also get an extra continue! This is key to winning the game because the game gets challenging, especially in the later stages. The first stage you won’t be able to do a clean sweep against the enemy Noid, so you should use your slices strategically in order to achieve a close victory. Remember, the hot sauce and the pepper will make it so the evil Noid can’t use his slices, so use those whenever the Noid picks a high-numbered card of slices.

As you get to the later stages you will be tempted to use your multiplier cards sparingly against the Noid in order to win the battle. But the key is to try and beat him as fast as possible. One thing that you should know is that in the stages beyond stage 3, there are many slice modifier “II” things that are actually invisible. And you need to attack the air like a fool constantly in order to make them appear and for you to take them. So make sure to jump around all the time and search with your yo-yo to find these items. If you don’t do this, you won’t collect enough modifiers in order to do a clean sweep against the enemy Noid on the pizza eating contests.

One thing to mention is that if you do not win the pizza eating contest, you will loose a life and will be sent back to the beginning of the last platforming stage. So it is imperative that when you play a pizza eating contest, you win.

The power-ups in the game are small scrolls and large scrolls. If you attack a large scroll with your yo-yo then a special move item will appear. (or sometimes a 1-up item will appear) The special move is usually a snowflake or a pogo-stick looking thing. But there are others as well. The snowflake move is activated when you have at least an entire horizontal bar of “small scrolls” at the bottom of the screen. To activate it you press, “Down” and “B.” Since it takes an entire horizontal bar, you can only cast the snowflake skill twice before refilling your small scrolls. But the cool thing about this ability, is that you can destroy all destructible enemies on the screen, including flying ones.

The pogo stick skill is cool too, because it can kill enemies that are on the ground with an earthquake. Also it only uses a fraction of the amount of small scrolls to do so. But being able to destroy flying targets is far superior so I prefer the snowflake skill.

There is a fast-run skill also but I haven’t had a lot of luck with that one. Maybe you will have a better time using this ability.

Yo Noid apartment

Sometimes even getting to the pizza eating contest is a tall order. The first really challenging stage is the second one. There is ice everywhere. A thing to remember here is that when you jump on the floating ice things that travel from side to side, they are slippery. So you need to move in the opposite direction of the one that you were jumping in, in order to stay still and not fall off. In the part where there are two of these things, you can jump then walk a bit to the left to stay stationary. Then wait for the second one to pass you, for some reason it is safer to be patient here. Then when you get closer the second time, do a timed jump onto the other moving ice platform. But you will probably need to jump immediately after you touch down and do a jumping dance on the platform in order to get across. I’ve only been able to land on the second one and stay still a couple times. And it takes a serious amount of practice.

When you’re on the skateboarding stage, the trickiest thing is the football dropping guys. Their footballs explode after a short amount of time. But if you are patient, most of the time these enemies will simply fly over you and their footballs will explode before they hit you. The long jump at the end is doable by picking up some speed from the incline and jumping at the last second before falling off the ramp.

The stage where the dock moves up when you hit a “dock icon” is where you first encounter the invisible, “II” and “III” items. So you should start attacking the air and memorizing where you find the power-ups. The main thing to keep in mind for this stage is Patience. There are this flying fish that jump out and if you are too hasty, they will kill you. So when you jump to a new area inch forward a bit and take out the flying fish. There is this one part where you encounter a silver frog who seems to be invincible. I’ve tried hitting this fool hundreds of times with my yo-yo and he keeps on dancing. This frog is legit and it is best to just jump over this kid before he 2-steps all over you. The cannons in this stage are tricky but you can use the snowflake skill to destroy the bubbles before they explode. If you hit the cannon bubbles with your yo-yo they will send out dangerous smoke that kills you in a wider radius than it you dodge them or use snowflake skill.

In the strange propeller flying stage, you need to immediately press “A” to get a boost of altitude. It was really funny when I first played this stage because I just dropped like a log and died. I busted up laughing when this happened. “Little warning, thanks?!?” Watch out for the flying squirrels.

The next stage that is worth mentioning is the circus level. This stage scrolls automatically and you need to move quickly to survive. Many of the carousel creatures turn into bad guys. But the ones that are over botomless pits never turn into bad guys. You need to jump on these things fast and don’t be too patient. If you hesitate then you will die. In later levels the main things to think about is searching for the “II” and “III” items. This circus stage is especially in line with this. The Enemy Noids keep getting more and more slices of pizza to choose from during each pizza eating contest so you will need all the bonuses you can get.

The second to the last stage which is a tall winding apartment exterior is definitely worth discussing in detail. There are these flower pots that come out of windows and you need to get close without dying. Then within range, fire your yo-yo blindly for a while until you kill a couple of them. (you will hear a sound) Then jump over the window. This part is kind of like real life. Standing underneath an open window is a bad idea. You want to stay moving on this stage. There is this sewing machine thing that fires out debris. It is really dangerous. You need to move extremely quickly and get it to shoot at you in one direction and then jump up to the next ledge as fast as you can. If you stand still you will get killed. The hilarious part of this stage is when you go up against a police officer who is tossing a barrel down at you. You need to jump over the barrel. Running away from it will not help. If you run away it will seriously chase you down the entire ridiculous stage. And if you get too close to the police officer he will pull out his Billy Club and terminate you. But if you hang back the cop will simply jump down the apartment to his doom. So don’t try to 1 on 1 the police.

The last stage is another flying stage and it is actually really fun. Just make sure to pick up as many “II” and “III” items as you can. Because you will need them for the final battle with the Green Noid.

Overall this game is excellent for building reflexes and pattern recognition. Like many of the old games, it focuses on dexterity and skill instead of level grinding and perseverance. Even though it is extremely easy to die in this game, it is not very discouraging and if you give it breaks it is a lot of fun. It isn’t rewarding enough of game play to jam out during a weekend. This game is best come back to over a longer period, very casually, in order to gauge how your reflexes and zen concentration is building.

I’d recommend this game to anyone who wants a beatable game that has serious challenge. This is not an impossible game, but it does require some memorization of enemy movement and hidden item locations.
