80 Proof live at the Slidebar

80 Proof put on an excellent 40 minute show at the Slidebar on Thursday, February 10th. The music was good and the showmanship was top notch. Especially their percussionist/keyboard player Alex Williamson did a great job keeping the energy pumping for the entire set. The type of music is some reggae with some ska mixed in there. This band is a large one, there are 6 people in there. So they put on a serious show. The Slidebar had a great soundsystem and I was able to hear all the different instruments and the two vocalists on almost every song. The musical style is a familiar one. So if you like the band, “Sublime” then you will probably really enjoy 80 Proof. And even though the music isn’t mind-blowingly unique sounding, they play the songs well and sound great. Many of their songs are related to drinking so it is definitely a party band.

I noticed at the club there were both guys and girls dancing and having a good time. And there wasn’t a mosh pit which was a nice break. I even saw two girls that looked really good dance to the music with skill. So that is something to think about.

One of the cool things about 80 Proof is that they have a drummer and a percussionist/keyboardist. So their sound is very full and punchy. Finding the beat is very clear and you just need to either listen or look at the band to figure out how to groove with them. So this would be a winner choice of a band to go to on a date, if you either were a good dancer or didn’t know how to dance. Because you can just rock around to the music and the tempo is very manageable.

Another great thing about the band is that they had a casual and genuine demeanor onstage. This was a key point for me, because I thought that the style of music they played usually came with a thick ego. So seeing the vocalists and guitarists rock out and interact with the audience on a legit level made me stoked that I came to the show.

It looked like the club was pretty full for 80 Proof. I’d say the crowd filled the place to about 80% of capacity. That was impressive for a Thursday night.

Did I mention that I was glad there wasn’t a mosh pit?

Another good thing to bring up, is that even though there was a lot of people there drinking and everything…everyone seemed cool with each other and there wasn’t any fighting. It had a comfortable vibe, despite the fact that there was such a mix of people in their 20’s and early 30’s there. (early 30’s being me)

Wow that was a laugh

This is going to show how rusty I am with actionscript.

In the music video I didn’t remember how to play an animated movie clip within an already playing movie. I thought that I needed to do something special. So I’ve been reading tons on actionscript and I’ve been thinking to myself, “Man, why is this so complicated? I don’t want to be thinking about boolean stuff right now. I just want my damn sun to shine!”

I’ve been looking on forums for 2 days and reading tutorials and nothing has helped. Until I finally just read the online manual for actionscript and I got to one point and realized that the:

“sun1a.play();”  command actually wouldn’t display any animation while I was still inside flash itself. I needed to export or at least do a test render of the movie. And when I ended up doing it and rendering it it worked perfectly. And the real laugh was that the time needed to save my project dropped from 40 seconds per save with a soft hang to about 4 second save. That’s when I literally laughed out loud.

Sometimes the simplest things can make a huge difference. I can’t believe I forgot that.

Taking a break from HoN

Filed under: Overidon News — Tyler @ 12:57 pm

I’m taking a break from Heroes of Newerth. Although I haven’t been playing the game much lately anyway. Time has just been too limited with School and the new music video and everything. I’m having to learn aspects of actionscript 3.0 in order to even complete the music video and this is taking a lot of concentration because I don’t know the exact terms of what I am trying to do with the movie clips. So I’m basically going to have to start from the beginning from what I remember of actionscript for macromedia flash 8 and apply that as I jam through actionstript 3.0.

First Impressions of the Verizon iPhone 4

Pic Taken with iPhone

So here are my first impressions on my new Verizon Service iPhone 4. I called my friend about an hour ago and compared to my AT&T Touch Screen phone, the signal quality was extremely clear. I could understand my friend very easily and there wasn’t any fuzz or distortion. Also I was able to connect to my home WI-FI easily and that was good times. I’ve used iPhones before but this is my first time actually owning one. And although I only used the iPhone 3 before I can say that I am impressed with the connection quality on Verizon. Another thing that I noticed was the GPS system on the maps seem to update very quickly. I watched myself walk a block away from my house to Starbucks and I noticed that the dot was updating very quickly. This is important because the GPS didn’t always update very well from my experience using the iPhone on the AT&T network. But again that was an iPhone 3 not “4” so please take everything I say with a grain of salt.

The screen quality is excellent and I’m impressed by the accuracy of the touch screen. Compared to my old phone it is worlds apart. The iPhone is substantially heavier than my old phone…which was substantially heavier than my phone before that. But I guess this is a good thing, because I despise it when my phone falls out of my pocket. But knowing my luck I made sure to add a password to my phone.

I don’t want anyone reading my copy of Winnie the Poo.
