Abnormally High amount of Pedestrians on Avocado

Scenic Road

Lots of People on the Road lately

Today there were a bunch of pedestrians on the road of Avocado here in Corona del Mar. I was on my way back home from the gym and I noticed there were 2 pairs of teenagers walking up the hill that seemed to be in separate groups. And then a minute or so I saw a couple in their late 30’s walking up the hill. I walk home from the gym all the time, on the weekends and during the week. So this was odd seeing 6 people in such a short frame of time on Avocado. This is especially strange because the construction of the government building near the library makes the walk slightly dusty and not visually appealing. So it isn’t really a scenic walk. The first thing that comes to mind is that with the increased price of gasoline people are considering other options for transportation. And I guess walking is the cheapest form. This is, of course, if you don’t count the extra snacks one needs to eat as a result of the exercise.

Another factor may be the nice weather. It was a cool yet very beautiful morning. And there really was no excuse for people to stay indoors. (unless you were stapled to the floor)

Could this be some freak fluctuation in pedestrian based traffic? We will monitor this situation closely and report back with our findings.

Genetic Modification through behavior

Genetic Modification

I was browsing around using my new, Stumbleupon.c0m account, and I found a very interesting webpage by NPR. This page was what appeared to be a mildly-interactive Flash movie of the Buddha’s wheel of Life. The wheel was intriguing but what really blew my mind and set me on a good track of thinking was the part on Humans. In this section the narrator, Robert Thurman discusses that Human form is a preferable form of existence because of several reasons. But what really stood out for me what that he said that humans have the ability to change their behavior and affect their genetic information. This line of thinking is slightly non-intuitive and intuitive at the same time. It is almost an extension of the old, “You are what you eat” kind of thinking, but it goes much further.

I first heard this type of hypothesis when I saw the movie, “What the Bleep Do we Know?” Now I know there are a lot of people who disagree with the things said in that movie and I’m not a quantum physicist (yet) so I’m not going to argue. But one thing in that movie that I read about in College Level biology was about how cells are controlled by the instructions in the genetic information. And different receptors on the cells and how many of them there are is worth study.

For example, there are receptors on cells for different chemicals. And different emotions that people experience trigger chemical responses in the organs and that can lead to chemicals being introduced into the blood stream. But if cells get used to receiving certain chemicals, they can adapt and they change and they may actually grow more receptors for that specific chemical. That’s where chemical dependency gets into the mix.

So this is where pleasure based habits are tricky. They don’t just affect how you feel, they affect how the cells grow also. But what my interpretation of the narrator’s words are in the video is that someone who is on the path of enlightenment can overtime confront their desires and addictions and modify his or her behavior. And by changing the behavior the cells produce different receptors, quite simply, because they aren’t being bombarded by the chemicals they are used to anymore. So the cells create new receptors for different life functions.

This is an important thing to think about, because there is only so much surface area on a human cell. So when it is covered in receptors that are focused on some sort of addictive habitual behavior, the cells are missing out on receptors that are useful for vital life functions. This may make one think for a second, when they say, “I’ve been feeling sluggish lately.”

Honestly, I’m just as skeptical of this mind-over-matter stuff myself. I love “Q” and “Adria” and all those guys but I think it is easy to get a few steps ahead of ourselves with wishful thinking.

All I know is what I can remember from what I’ve directly experienced. And I’ve directly experienced physical, emotional, and energy level changes. Unfortunately the positive changes usually came from sacrificing and extreme moderation. It really is not fun at first but there is definitely a trade-off.

Let’s take Venti Whole Milk Lattes for example. I used to love those. They would give me a burst of energy, I would blog like crazy with them. It was fun getting them and talking with the Baristas about current events or TV shows or whatever. The whole process was fun. But what would happen is that after having them almost every day, I would feel cloudy and muddled. And after a couple months I would get sick and need to de-tox from lattes.

What was happening is that, like usual, I would take a fun treat and turn it into a ritualistic habit. I have a real vulnerability for this. So what I think was going on, was that after a few months, my cells were reproducing with more receptors for the sugar in the milk…and more receptors for the caffeine from the espresso.

How is this possible? Well, I’m guessing that the cells don’t actually “GROW” new receptors. What I think happens is that the cell realizes that there is an abundance of caffeine floating around in the bloodstream, so it reprograms the Genetic Information so that when it splits up and reproduces, the new cells are created with more receptors to take advantage of the available abundant chemicals.

But the tough part is when I try to kick the latte habit, I feel even worse. This is because the cells hypothetically have many receptors and are trained to absorb the caffeine and sugar are perplexed by the change in blood chemistry. So they release information back to the brain of how the cells aren’t satisfied with the blood chemistry. And this gets interpreted by the brain as a craving.

The sad part is that cravings are actually essential parts of human experience. They aren’t good or bad, they are part of how humans survived when there were less abundant times. If you lived many hundreds of years ago, in a different society, you may crave salt, which is a neural transmitter. Because if you don’t get enough salt your brain and nerves have trouble functioning. But today salt is so abundant in most restaurant foods, we get overloaded and bloated.

But it is very difficult to combat these hard-wired cravings that have helped humanity survive trying times. But it is the struggle and eventual attainment of different tiers of self-behavioral modification that can lead to seriously positive things. And I think that is what the narrator in the video is touching on, albeit very briefly.

Number Four stigmatic correlation with Iron Man

Filed under: Observations — Tyler @ 6:56 pm
Iron Man stigmata Number 4

Iron Man, stigmata and Number Four

Iron Man, I am Number Four have something in common besides being action-packed Science Fiction films. Both movies have their respective main character send forth light and energy from the palms of their hands. In Iron Man, the character, Tony Stark who wears the Iron Man suit of armor, uses “Repulsor Beams” in order to either fly, push opponents, or destroy large targets. Quite similarly, the main character in, “I am Number Four” named John Smith is an alien who can send a tremendous amount of energy from his hands. John’s palms can act as flashlights, fire lasers, and can be used in his form of telekinesis (among other things). What is interesting is that both characters send energy from the palms of their hands as opposed to a shoulder cannon like a “Predator” or from their eyes like Superman or Cyclops. There is a correlation between these movies, the palms of the hands are symbolic of the Stigmata of suffering.

Whether or not if you believe in the suffering of Jesus, the crucifixion is deeply ingrained into the conscious and subconscious minds of most moviegoers. So it happens quite often that Christian stories and morals are portrayed in films either directly or indirectly. But in the case of Iron Man and I am Number Four, the role of the stigmata is reversed. Instead of the hands being a badge of suffering and ascendancy, the palms are a source of offensive power.

The physical characteristics of the palms of Iron Man and John Smith are quite striking. Both are circular shapes in the palm of the hand. Both emit energy, (especially light). And both have the ability to be activated and deactivated. This latter aspect is extremely important because it directly relates to the concept of control which is becoming a central theme in modern media consciousness. This is probably because the masses feel so out-of-control with the economy and unfolding events in the Middle East and other regions.

Yet the physical characteristics of the palms are no-way near as poignant as how these abilities were acquired. In Tony Stark’s case, his hands are able to emit energy when he wears the Iron Man suit, because he experienced a great deal of suffering. The reason for this is because if it was not for the damage he endured to his heart when he was attacked, then he would not have needed a way to protect his heart from the shrapnel. It was the suffering that he experienced that forced Mr. Stark to innovate and create his energy source in order to free himself from having to carry a heavy battery around everywhere he went. Thus it was the suffering itself that eventually became Tony Stark’s greatest catalyst to become powerful.

In, I am Number Four, John Smith was an alien from a world that was destroyed by enemies. And his special abilities were passed down to him from his “father” (this is according to his bodyguard about half-way through the movie). So John Smith’s suffering is quite different from Tony Stark’s. His suffering was primarily based on his feeling of loss toward a family he never got to fully know, the isolation from his fellow alien kindred, and his lack of a true identity. Instead of using his palm powers in order to redeem himself for past corporate mistakes like Iron Man did in the first film, John Smith uses his palms to protect Earth from experiencing the same fate as his home world.

The palms as being instruments of power is indicative of subconscious Christianity-based archetypes, resurfacing in modern media in order to create an aggressive savior-complex.

This is quite different from old heroes that primarily use swords, firearms, or closed fists. The open palm symbolizes spiritual strength over physical ability. And even though both Iron Man and John Smith demonstrated that there were at least semi-capable fighters, their preferred method to confront evil was their palms.

The parallel between stigmata and John Smith in I am Number Four is illuminated in the middle of the film. At one point John is walking around a dark corridor with his friends/allies and they are having trouble seeing. So John uses his palms as virtual flash lights to not only brighten the path for himself, but for his friends as well. Just as the stigmata for Christian Savior was proof that he was in fact who he said he was after his biblical Resurrection, John Smith’s palms are proof if his identity as the son of another world…and the protector of this one.

What was the first thing that Iron Man did after he acquired his palm, repulsor technology? He learned how to fly and then flew over to the Middle East and then laid the smack down. There is a lot more going on here than a vehicle to get Robert Downey Jr. back on the map.

In ages of old, History, Mythology and Religion were the primary forms of indoctrination for young people. But today, Western Youth are more inclined to listen to stories that are completely fanciful than believe time-honored traditions. So the rise of the super-hero has been directed and modified in order to become a teaching tool. This is made obvious by the Disney acquisition of Marvel. The company, Marvel, which owns the X-Men franchise and Iron Man, started to affect the minds of young people and some adults from secondary media outlets like comic books, and computer games, and into MASS MEDIA outlets like, Television and Movies. Disney must have realized that in order to maintain its position of teacher for young males, it needed to have access to this larger-than-life set of archetypes, that have already been established as profitable for the past 30 years.

The subliminal suggestion being made is: Through your suffering, you shall find strength. And that strength, is something that you must use.

This theme seems more like a cry for help, than a forceful indoctrination or ultimatum.

The stigmatic correlation is not to cheapen the message of these two films. It is simply an observation that the symbolic programming of young minds is changing. The open palm vs. the closed fist. The sufferer vs. the vengeance seeking.

Think of the producers and executives that choose what types of films and television to fund, support, and spotlight. They are presented with a myriad of choices and they must choose what they think and feel will be the most profitable in both the long and short term. A film with good imagery may or may not be a box office hit opening night, but it may achieve a following that is overwhelming in DVD sales and/or merchandising. So the bigger the budget of the film, the more thought that goes into the themes and imagery. The reason for this, is because themes are what encourage long term DVD and blue ray sales. That’s why people re-watch films, it is because of the lessons and themes, as opposed to plots and even characters.

All this being said, I’d like to leave you with a joke:

What did the Network Executive say to the rebellious Producer?

“Get with the program.”

Starfleet Officers hit the gym too

Starfleet Officer in Gym Uniform

The gym was intense today. Some man got hurt on the treadmill and bled all over it. I saw the blood with my own eyes. Too bad Dr. Crusher wasn’t there to give him a hypospray. The gym employee girl said, “This is why I didn’t end up being a cop.” I guess that was because she didn’t like wiping up the blood. That didn’t make a tremendous amount of sense because not all cops have to wipe up blood. On my way to the gym I saw a old friend who used to be my next door neighbor and he said I was looking “lean.” Lean, mean, away mission machine. After my workout I bought a power crunch protein cookie bar. I like to call them my, “Federation Field Rations.” They were probably designed by Dr. Julian Bashir. When I was in the middle of my workout I attempted to do some, “Prime Directive Dips.” But they were too hard so I need to level up before I do those.

I did some “Phase Induced Assisted Pull Ups,” I did a bunch of those with 60 pounds of assistance. (The lower the number the more challenging they are)  This is big news because I used to use 100 pounds of assistance. So I’m making progress.

Sometimes when I’m on away missions, like going to Starbucks or driving to school, I need extra strength and concentration in order for the mission to be a success. So I did some serious standing “Neutral Zone Bicep Curls.” Just saying.

I hope the guy who bled all over the place feels better soon.
