My simple yet hearty Vegetable Soup recipe

Filed under: Cooking — Tyler @ 11:50 pm

OVERIDON VEGETABLE SOUP

This is a vegetarian soup that is easy to make and takes about 25 – 40 minutes for preparation and cooking depending on how big you make it. I designed the recipe for bachelors who want something that tastes good but doesn’t make very much of a mess to make. It is very healthy but make sure that you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients before making the Overidon Vegetable Soup. ALSO – Make sure to wash your vegetables thoroughly and make sure they are clean and are fresh. Moldy veggies are not safe and can kill you.

READ THE ENTIRE RECIPE BEFORE STARTING TO CHOP AND COOK!

INGREDIENTS: The amount of each ingredient is up to you. The amounts that I am recommending are for a single person who is eating this for dinner. If you are bigger than 180 lbs. then go ahead and multiply the size of each ingredient by a factor of two.

3 – 5 pieces of broccoli: chopped (except don’t chop the tops to finely. The tops are tasty and add texture.

7 – 9 pieces of cauliflower: chopped (same as above)

1 handful of baby spinach (DOUBLE MAKE SURE TO WASH THIS): Chopped into fine strips

5 – 7 leaves of fresh basil: choppedĀ  (this will make it taste great)

2/3 [two-thirds] of a ripe big tomato (Use all the edible parts of the tomato that are juicy. So don’t use the core – it is too fleshy): Chopped into semi-big chunks

1 small handful of pitted brownish long olives that you get from one of those olive bars you see in nice supermarkets (they should be salty to the taste): chopped

12 – 17 string beans ( do not use the ends…cut ’em off): chop into quarter inch pieces. [your length may vary. It depends on how chunky you want your soup]

4 – 6 cups of clean water (I used New Zealand water that I got from Trader Joes) [You’ll notice that the amount of water varies. If you use too much water it is OK. It will just take longer to cook your Overidon Vegetable Soup.]

A couple pinches of Sea Salt (you can use regular table salt instead of Sea Salt. But Sea Salt is way better for this.)

PREPARATION

1: Get a small – medium sized cooking pot (depending on how much ingredients you used) and pour your water into it.

2: Start boiling the water.

3: While your water is boiling start washing and chopping the ingredients.

4: Put your prepared ingredients (except for the salt) into a medium – big sized bowl as you chop and prepare them.

5: When the water is at boiling temperature (you can tell by seeing huge bubbles popping at the surface violently) carefully add your prepared ingredients (except the salt. we add that later) to the boiling water.

6: Stir in all the ingredients carefully with a slotted wooden spoon (if you don’t have one of these don’t stress out. Any wooden spoon will do fine. If you just have a big metal one, just be careful that it doesn’t get too hot. Use a potholder if necessary.)

7: At this point your pot should be filled with colorful veggies. Stir it a few times and then cover it (leaving a slight crack for steam to escape) and lower the temperature to medium-high but it should still be boiling.

8. Wait 3 – 5 minutes.

9. Take off the cover with a potholder and smell the soup so far. It should smell really healthy and good. If it smells bad, you did something wrong.

10. This is the fun part. You should have a good amount water in your soup. What you do now if keep boiling the soup until a lot of the water turns into steams and goes away. This is called making a REDUCTION. It is a very fun and time honored way of cooking. So keep stirring occasionally and check on your soup every couple minutes or so to see the water/veggies ratio in the soup. This is easily the most important part of the preparation because it will determine if your soup is thin and bland or if your soup is thick and flavorful like a stew. How long you REDUCE the soup is up to you, but I recommend that you REDUCE until at least the tomatoes have mostly dissolved and the broth color has slightly changed color to a light brown. Taste test your broth with your spoon to determine how thick and flavorful you want it. REMEMBER: If you used too much water you can always just REDUCE the soup longer until you get the desired soupy/thickness ratio. I personally make my soup so it is chunky, with a medium-light brown broth. And I make sure that my tomatoes have almost completely dissolved into the soup.

11. Add your pinches of sea salt to the soup, stir, and then taste it again. (It should taste really good at this point. If it doesn’t then either you hate vegetables or else you screwed up this recipe.)

12. Once you get your soup to the desired thickness and the broth tastes good, turn off the heat and carefully pour your soup into your serving bowl. (if you were smart you just cleaned out the big bowl you used to collect the ingredients, and then used the big bowl to serve and eat your soup.)

13. Wait till your soup cools down enough so you can eat it and enjoy!

Hulu Commercial jokingly reveals hidden motives of TV

Alec Baldwin

Hulu Commercial shows Alec Baldwin as alien

Hollywood has a great sense of humor. It does so especially when it talks about itself. In this Hulu commercial, Hulu.com basically says that they are trying to reduce people’s brains into mush. And I’m pretty sure Alec Baldwin says that they are aliens. Now, I know that they are just joking about this take over the world stuff and that they are aliens. But when I think about it, the reason why they are joking about it, is because they are actually trying to take over the world by taking control of the commercials that people view. The reason why I say this is because whatever medium that you use to watch videos and TV, has control over the commercials that you watch. So if everyone starts watching their TV shows on Hulu.com, then that means that Hulu will get to choose what commercials you will see when the breaks come in the videos. This is a tremendous amount of power. He who holds control of the commercials we watch has command of the viewers who watch them. It couldn’t get more simple than that. Watching programs with commercials is basically a form of education. You watch the commercial and then get educated on what products to purchase. All the talk about taking over the world and aliens is just a ruse or smoke-screen to the real power play that is going on: There is a war being fought over the commercials that you watch and your consumption habits. And the winners of this commercial war will not only benefit with added marketshare, but they will be able to influence viewers and friends of viewers on such a wide scale that people will just accept the new trends and norms as rules of the day. The reason why we call television “programming,” and, “programs,” is not because we are watching programs. It is because our minds are being programmed by the constant stimuli and suggestions of the commercials, both at the breaks and the ones that are embedded inside shows via product-placement.

You are your own perfect spiritual teacher

You are your own perfect spiritual teacher. There are many amazing an excellent teachers on spirituality that have lived and spoken throughout the ages. These beings can be of great service in finding out things about your spirit. But no one truly knows and cares about your spirit than you. Now you may be thinking, “But I know very little about spirituality. How can I be the best teacher for myself?” First of all, understanding the fact that you know very little about spirituality means that you are very wise and is an excellent start for any spiritual undertaking. Once you accept the fact that there is much to learn about spirituality, and that you will probably die before figuring it all out, then you are in very good spiritual shape. Actually, the only tools you really need in order to teach yourself about spirituality are your mind, your spirit, patience, and honesty. When you decide no longer to deceive yourself, you are actually also deciding to allow yourself to become enlightened. This is because enlightenment is more like a choice or decision rather than it is a goal or a process. There is a great deal of responsibility attached to spiritual enlightenment. By deciding to be spiritually enlightened you are basically saying that you accept responsibility for all your past, present, and future actions. It takes self-honesty to do that. This is because by being honest with yourself you can accept the fact that you’re not perfect and in all likely-hood will never be. Some people may be reading this and be thinking, “Hey! I thought being perfect was the point of all this.” And now I am going to challenge you a little. If you were thinking that, or anything remotely near that, I think what you were really thinking was that you wanted to become powerful. The desire for power is a very real desire that most of us feel at one time or many times or even all the time during our lives. But what I’m saying is that there is no such thing as becoming, “Spiritually Powerful.” I think Spiritual Power is basically a scam term used for people to control other people. Power has very little to do with spirituality. Spirituality has to do with patience and honesty. Power has to do with invulnerability and control. A powerful person is able to control him or herself. A spiritual person is able to be him or herself. Wanting to become perfect, is basically wanting control.

You can teach yourself about spirituality by being honest with yourself about as much as possible. Sometimes we lie to ourselves or justify things falsely as a sort of defense mechanism to cope with everyday life. If you can slowly chip away at the calcified lies and untruths that you live with daily, you will find your internal dialogue changing. You will begin to challenge yourself on beliefs you may have lived by for years. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. That’s really the fun part of spirituality. Not being right is ok, especially if you understand that what you believe to be right today may be wrong tomorrow. Now, you may have some spiritual insight that you have accumulated and now you want to teach others. Before you do so, really question yourself and think, “Am I desiring to teach others because in doing so I will come closer to my spiritual enlightenment?” Or do you want to teach others because you want to have people listen to you? If people listen to you, you will probably feel powerful and complete. I argue that having people listen to you will not help you become more spiritual. It may make you more confident with your beliefs, and possibly more convincing when you share them. But that power and confidence is fleeting, what happens when people no longer agree with your teachings? What happens when no one else listens? But if you teach others because you understand that you can gain spiritual insight by interacting and stealing ideas from other people, then you are on the right path. There are no copyright laws when it comes to spirituality…if you have to teach people in order to have someone to debate with, then do so. Some people don’t like to argue about spirituality. So don’t argue with them. Find people who stimulate your mind and spirit and share insight and challenge each other, if you can do so respectfully then all the better. Just remember that you are your own perfect teacher. And if you start to believe in what other people say about spirituality without evaluating it and making it your own, you are missing out on one of the primary joys of spirituality. And that’s appreciating and experiencing every moment. If you allow yourself to be spoon fed spiritual rhetoric then you aren’t being patient enough with the capabilities of your own mind and spiritual teaching capability.

Be weary of people who want money or things in exchange for spiritual insight. Some people pay thousands of dollars per year in order to gain something toward their spirituality. If that’s you, you’re probably being scammed. Don’t take any offense to that, you aren’t alone. There are lots of people getting scammed out of money in exchange for spiritual insight. And some of these institutions offer things that you may be interested like social status, comradeship, friendship, community, security among other things. Just realize that the spiritual side of what you’re getting should only be a catalyst for further spiritual exploration into yourself. Learning and engaging your spirituality is something that you should treasure every step of the way and want to take at least partial credit for yourself. It’s kind of like making love to your sexual partner. That’s a beautiful thing. Hopefully it is something that you enjoy doing. Do you really want to give the job of making love to your partner to someone else? Then why are you giving the job of expanding your spiritual understanding to someone else?

A lot of people nowadays feel completely comfortable telling other people to, “Wake Up.” What are they really saying? I think what they are really saying is, “What up to what I’m telling you,” because there almost always is a message or request attached to their “Wake Up” slogan. I recommend caution when other people try telling you what to do. There almost is always an agenda. You don’t need people telling you what to do. You are smart enough to figure things out for yourself.

One suggestion that I have that may assist you in teaching yourself spirituality is: Get comfortable with yourself. You are made of the same stuff as almost everything else in the Universe, yet you are unique. If you can begin to appreciate yourself and enjoy the time you spend alone with yourself, with nothing really to do; as well as enjoy the time you spend with others, you are in good shape. Let’s face it, compared to other large animals, human beings aren’t very powerful creatures. We don’t have especially strong bodies or sharp claws. But we have great minds, and with those we can create and do amazing things. I’ve been to spiritual gatherings and the guru promised that we would gain abilities and powers by doing certain things. When it really comes down to it, who cares how powerful you are? If you really learned how to fly or how to hurl fireballs or come back from the dead, you would get snatched up by an unmarked black van and men in uniforms faster than you can say, “Spiritual Power” ten times. And if you became powerful enough to overpower those men in uniforms, what are you going to do? Fly away somewhere? Be alone and powerful for the rest of your life? That sounds boring. There is a certain pleasure and bliss to being weak. Embrace it and realize that if you are appreciating every moment, then you are never truly weak.

Certain Chord Progressions can cause spiritual experiences

There’s something special about music. Sound moves through the air, and then hits your eardrum. Then it vibrates your inner ear. And then your whole mind can hear the music. And you don’t really hear the music in your ears. You hear it like it is coming from within your head, and depending on if you are listening using headphones or speakers, you can feel the music move your entire body. The interesting thing is music is different for everybody. Some people enjoy certain genres, while other like music that elicits specific emotions from themselves. There are certain genres of music that I used to enjoy when I was in high school, and there’s the stuff I listen to today. It’s interesting how tastes change over the years. But what’s most interesting of all, is how music can assist in bringing forth spiritual experiences. And more specifically, certain chord progressions are able to elevate one’s spirit and make them sometimes feel outside their own body. Other times I’ll listen to music and feel like my entire being is being elevated. It feels great and it is amazing that music and a place to sit/lie/stand and something to give you the music are the only things you need to have these experiences.

What kind of music gives you spiritual experiences? Well, it’s safe to say that this will vary from person to person. Someone may listen to classical music and have a sort of awakening. Others may listen to trance music and feel their spirit soar. I personally have had spiritual experiences to the music by the Future Sound of London. There is a specific album called: A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic, this album is to my knowledge only available via electronic download. And I literally had spiritual experiences almost every time I listened to this album. I would lie down in my room and just be absorbed into the music. The music comes from a project that FSOL did for a museum called THE KINETICA MUSEUM – and was originally recorded in 5.1 sourround. I’ve only had the pleasure of listening to the stereo mixes. I bet the 5.1 surround mixes are unbelievably amazing. Unfortunately I just bought the album from FSOLdigital.com and tried downloading the songs and all I was able to download was the album cover. Needless to say I was a little upset. But I emailed them so I should hear back from them pretty soon. This was my first time using their online store. I wonder why the links didn’t work.

The music in A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic was very ambient and oftentimes minimalistic. But there were certain chord progressions, and many of them were implied. I say implied because there would be music, then silence, but during the silence you still here sounds in your mind. The sounds are almost filled in, by your mind. It is kind of like a pattern is shown to you but it is incomplete. But there are only a certain number of ways to complete the pattern, so your mind uses context clues from other ambient sounds in the music to fill the gaps and create a very stimulating musical experience.

My suggestion for finding spiritual music is to talk to your friends and find out what kind of music is spiritually stimulating for them. Listen to their advice and try and find out the real “gems” of what they enjoy. Sometimes it takes a little prodding and getting to know someone musically before they even feel comfortable sharing their more intimate tracks with you. If you can find a group of friends that you can listen to music safely and respectfully together, it is a very cherish-able experience. But it isn’t always easy connecting with people in person, so you may have to take recommendations of music from reviews and other sources, possibly online ones.

If you want to talk music ever, please add me as a friend on Facebook and I can point you in the direction of some my favorite pieces of music for spiritual experiences. If you can get a hold of A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic by the Future Sound of London (FSOL) and can find a place where you can listen and close your eyes, you will have a good start. If you can’t get a hold of A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic, then I recommend their double album, Lifeforms. That album is a different kind of spiritual, it is more nature-spiritual, but it is still great. A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic for me seems to access the part of the spirit which is the solitary place…the place where the mind is truly naked and free of desires and ego.

You may be wondering what the difference is between listening to music like this and meditating. Well, this is like meditating WITH the music. Let the music be your guide. If you are able to get comfortable and listen with your eyes closed, then you will probably get better results. Also if you can breathe in a relaxed way, in through your nose, and out through your mouth…until you stop thinking about your breath all together. That’s a great way to ease into your state of relaxation. But remember, this stuff can be completely different for you. You may like higher energy music and dancing around and chanting a lot. Or you may hit different spiritual areas of yourself by doing yoga and then listening to music. Feel free to leave a comment about any experiences you may have had.

UPDATE: FSOL Digital just emailed me a link to where I can download the A Gigantic Globular Burst OF Antistatic. Now I am downloading it right now and it works. If you have any problem downloading it, you should email their sales and info email and you will probably get a response in a day or two.
