Access your inner Rudimentary Failure with Gamma Rain

It’s not everyday that I listen to brand-new and unique electronic music. But tonight was my lucky time, because I got to listen to Gamma Rain. Gamma Rain is an experimental electronic project by Tim Allen. Now I am pretty sure this is the same person who makes music who is known as Derj. But this Gamma Rain music is less aggressive and more experimentally electronic than Derj. This song, “Rudimentary Failure” is mind bending to say the least. It has three primary movements and it uses tweaky digital sounds that seem to warp my brain patterns as if to wake me out of a trance. I always knew that music affected brain frequencies via sonic interference but Gamma Rain’s “Rudimentary Failure” really made this way of thinking concrete. It’s not that I feel smarter after listening to the song over and over again, it’s more like I feel slightly more alert and aware. This is sharp music. You can’t help but be changed a little by it.

The first movement of “Rudimentary Failure” is an upbeat, positive, almost playful beginning. It sounds like you are in a digital forest in the winter. And the snow is falling on the electronic pond and is making music as each snowflake hits the surface and ripples vibration patterns of binary code on the water. The drums sound like they are being played by buck-toothed squirrels. The squirrels are playing the beats on over-sized, hollowed out acorns.

The second movement is the brain reprogramming part. At first the left channel sound, seems to be kind of wierd and uninviting. But then after a few patterns it sounds like it is flipping a switch in my brain. Almost accessing areas of the mind that were dormant.

The final movement includes cool tonal samples of human voices that bounce in the center of the mix. It actually sounds like there is music right in front of me, even though I am listening to it on headphones.

I am really excited to listen to what other new music Gamma Rain has in store for us. I definitely like this experimental style that is set forth in “Rudimentary Failure.” I am going to keep an eye on Gamma Rain because I think he is really onto something here. The music coming out of this artist is very unique and seems to belong to its own style.

Mega Man 2 is an awesome game that you can play on your Wii

Air Man Stage

Mega Man 2 - Air Man Stage

The Wii Virtual Console is really an amazing invention. It lets you download old-school games directly to your Nintendo Wii. One game that you really need to play if you haven’t already, is called, Mega Man 2. This game is very awesome. In Mega Man 2 you play the character of Mega Man, a robot created by Dr. Light. You are an interesting kind of robot, because you can gain the abilities of other robots that you defeat in combat. In this game you also get certain upgrades and a robot helper, named Rush the robot dog. This is cool because Rush helps you move around the game, either by turning into a giant springboard, a horizontal moving jet, or a hovering platform. The music in this game is amazing. It sounds like some high-energy progressive rock music with electronic themes. Each stage is great, because the levels have a specific look and feel that is related to the boss you are going to face. This is great for the setting. It gives the game a very immersive feel.

Here are some hints when you play Mega Man 2. First of all you should be shooting as much as you can. The reason for this is because certain enemies can drop items. These items include bonus health, added ammo for your special weapons, or even in some cases there is a small percentage chance that a dead enemy will drop a Mega Man face, which is actually a 1UP or free life. So if you are in an area where there are lots of smaller enemies that spawn frequently and you are low on health or ammo. Go ahead and blast them over and over again and try and see what they drop. Another tip is that 1UPs respawn (reappear) when you die. So if you are able to pick up more than one 1UPs in a stage and you are close to dying, it is ok to die if you remember to grab the 1UPs over again. Another important thing to remember is that there are “E” energy tanks in the game. You can use them by hitting start and selecting the “E” tank. These energy tanks will fill your health to the max, so be sure to pick them up as often as you can. These items don’t respawn if you die so be careful. The one good thing is that even if you die, the tanks stay in your inventory. A good stage to start the game on would be Air Man stage, this level is pretty easy to beat and you can kill Air Man with only your primary weapon if you are careful. Once you play the Metal Man stage and defeat Metal Man you will get the special weapon called the, “Metal Blade.” This weapon seriously owns and you can shoot it in all 8 directions and it does excellent damage. I recommend getting this weapon as soon as you can.

The bosses that you fight in Mega Man 2 are very fun to battle against and the fights are usually intense. It may take you several tries to defeat a boss and the best way to fight them is to try and memorize their fighting and jumping patterns. Sometimes the best way to fight against a boss is to be evasive and jump over their attacks and avoid them. This will give you openings to get a few shots off. But other times you’ll find that the best tactic is to take a hit from a boss and blast them as much as you can in order to inflict more damage to them then they do to you, and then destroy them. Defeating an enemy boss is very rewarding and satisfying because the music is cool and you basically teleport to your base and get upgraded. The whole upgrade sequence is nothing short of rad, and you will feel good when it happens.

Overall Mega Man 2 is challenging but not impossible to beat. I think it is easier than Mega Man 1, and it has good replay value, mostly because of the music. One important thing to keep in the back of your mind while playing Mega Man 2 is not to let yourself get frustrated. And when you die, just try and remember the patterns that lead you to your death, and try not to repeat them. Mega Man 2 makes you use your brain and is more than a simple action game. It helps you to memorize patterns, which is good for building intelligence. Remember that some areas like certain spots that have power-ups are only accessible if you use your Rush Dog robotic helper. Also some places like the large ravine in the Heat Man stage that can be completely bypassed by using the Rush Jet. If you like action platform games, then you are going to love Mega Man 2. Leave a comment if you have beaten it before or if you are stuck in an area!

The Wet Burrito at Ted’s Place with Carne Asada was Gigantic

Big thanks to my friend, Brandon Tash for bringing me to Ted’s Place. This is one of his favorite places to eat, and now I can really see why. At first when we drove up to Ted’s Place I was sort of confused. It looked like it was the size of a restaurant, but it had the images and menus and specials that looked like a diner or a fast food place. When we got inside I saw a large counter that wrapped around the store, it had a self-serve tortilla chip area, salsa bar (no not the dancing, I’m talking about the condiment), there was a place to get pickled carrots, and an unlimited soda fountain, and even a horchata dispenser. When I got to the ordering area I was blown away by the menu. There is over 190 items available on the menu to order. This number doesn’t even count the specials that were hand written.

Fortunately, I had an idea of what I wanted to order. I knew that I wanted Mexican food. And I was pleased to see that they had a wide selection of Tacos, Burritos, Enchiladas, Quesadillas, Plates, and Taquitos, and Fajitas. I thought for a moment and decided on getting a Wet Burrito. This was one of the best dining decisions of my life. Since it was evening when we ordered the meal was delivered to our table. This is different from lunch time when you have to pick your food up at the counter. So anyway, before the meal was delivered, Brandon and I got some snacks from the counter. We got tortilla chips, pickled carrots (which were doused in vinegar and tasted pretty good) and I also got some horchata to drink. Then, when the Wet Burrito hit my table I was in food heaven! The Wet Burrito was HUGE! It was the largest Burrito I’ve ever had in my entire life! The thing was the size of a large dinner plate, NO JOKE. It came with rice and beans and lots of red sauce.

But here’s the special thing that happened with my burrito: When I ordered it, the lady at the register asked me what kind of meat I wanted in the burrito. Being a man of wisdom, instead of simply blurting out an answer, I decided to ask a question. So I asked, “What kind of meat do you recommend? What’s your favorite?” And without hesitation the lady said, “Carne Asada!” and I was so glad she answered me honestly without beating around the bush. So I decided to take her advice and get it with Carne Asada. So when the Wet Burrito finally came to my table and I took a bite, it was like eating a perfectly cooked Carne Asada steak that was sliced into thin pieces. It was delicious. Each fork-full, had beans and rice and was covered in sauce, and the meat was amazing. At first I thought that it was going to be too much food. But I ate half of it without really noticing. My friend Brandon, was amazed at how much progress I was making with the burrito.

I was almost able to eat the whole thing with the rice and beans and everything. But I stopped myself before I exploded. I felt really full even though all I had to eat that day was a small bowl of cereal. The Wet Burrito was so much food that I didn’t need to eat dinner or lunch the next day. All I ate the next day was some cereal and a Caramel Macchiato, which was delicious by the way. Honestly, I still feel full from that burrito and it’s been 2 days later. All I’ve had to eat was a ham sandwich and another caramel macchiato. I think these things are going to make me fat but I love them.

Overall I think Ted’s is an amazing place to eat. The service is fast, the meals are huge and the prices are reasonable. The Wet Burrito I ordered cost me $9.00 plus tax. And that came with unlimited horchata and rice and beans. The next time I go to eat there, I will probably make sure not to eat breakfast or anything else that day. The reason is because there is so much food. If you like Wet Burrito’s lathered in red sauce and cheese and you love Carne Asada, you will probably be very happy with the Wet Burrito from Ted’s Place!

Subliminal Themes and Connections between Eagle Eye and Enemy of the State

Filed under: Observations — Tyler @ 10:50 pm
Eagle Eye

There are subliminal themes in Eagle Eye

Our minds are being bombarded with subliminal messages all the time. But what I am going to talk about in this article is something a little different from subliminal stimuli or messages, what I am going to present to you is the idea of Subliminal Themes in movies. What I mean by Subliminal Themes is the idea that movies tell a story, that much is obvious. And in each movie there is a basic plot that the story follows. And within that plot the characters create a theme which is the unifying idea of the story. But I argue a Subliminal Theme is a unifying idea in the movie that one does not perceive consciously and it isn’t actually talked about by the characters, it is instead transmitted to the viewer by short repeated messages and visual concepts throughout the film. And a Subliminal Theme oftentimes over-arches and connects with other films that may or may not be created by the same filmmakers. These Subliminal Themes are created in part by the film itself, and also by the consumers interest and demand for the film. Thus the marketplace helps to create Subliminal Themes and they can extend over long periods of time.

In the movie, Eagle Eye (2008) the main characters are being manipulated by a big computer who is trying to wipe out the main people in the Executive Branch of Government. The reason why it says it is doing this, is because the Executive Branch has become too powerful. The main theme of the movie is that surveillance and networked computer technology has become too sophisticated and powerful and that there needs to be oversight into our own methods of security. But there is an underlying, Subliminal Theme in the movie that isn’t quite as obvious to see. I picked up on it when I saw how the digital technology was directly communicating with the main character, “Jerry” played by Shia LaBeouf. Basically throughout the movie, this computer intelligence is telling Jerry what to do, either by calling him on the phone or by displaying digital messages on electronic billboards and portable devices. There is a connection to be made: Technology has gotten so advanced that it has become a neural network, that can reach you from almost anywhere. This Subliminal Theme has multiple prongs to its mental attack. On one hand, it is sending the idea, that there is no escape from electronic technology and surveillance. And the end result of this is to basically and quite blatantly heighten the viewer’s level of paranoia. But this paranoia isn’t geared to make you not want to use technology. In fact the technology is presented in a very, “Gee wiz. How cool.” sort of way that almost makes being contacted anywhere on the grid seem fun and exciting. The paranoia is trying to make you actually comfortable with being watched. It is in a way trying to prepare and settle down the viewer so that he or she would feel at ease with surveillance. The computer that creates the problem in the first place is portrayed to be so advanced, that it is almost re-assuring to think that there is an intelligence this diligent and well-connected that it is watching over us without hesitation and without rest. So what is the end result of this Subliminal Theme of accepting paranoia? In short, it is becoming one with the surveillance state. We are no longer in Kansas anymore. The system that we live in rewards people who stay connected with increased exposure and opportunities. Yet in order to gain these connections and opportunities one must sacrifice a layer of privacy with each turn. We are being directed, herded like sheep or cattle really, in the direction of being transparent to the system. And strangely we aren’t really becoming naked before some kind of supercomputer that is tracking us. We are in reality self-monitoring each other. Big Brother is in fact the very friends you have made. We are remodeling our own images each moment we post something to our Facebook Wall, in order to gain more approval and interest from our friends and in many cases online acquaintances. The government’s biggest ally in surveillance and controlling the masses is us. Eagle Eye uses slight of hand to make us think that we are threatened by super-powerful futuristic computers. When in fact we are in fact being controlled by one of human society’s biggest tools: The desire to both fit in, and to be unique. When online, people are rewarded by being unique by getting more attention from their peers. A cool picture will be, “Liked” and a funny post will get a “thumbs up.” Yet at the same time people will get massive attention by discussing the mundane aspects of life on their “wall” or “comment box.” The end result of this Subliminal Theme within our own culture is nothing less than behavioral modification.

Enemy of the State

Click the picture to learn more about the movie Enemy of the State

Ten years before Eagle Eye came out, there was a movie called, Enemy of the State (1998). This movie starred Will Smith and Gene Hackman. It was about a murder of a politician that was going to resist a law which would increase the surveillance of the American people. Will Smith’s character gets a hold of a video file that proves that the politician was murdered, and bad guys try and get it from Will Smith, and they use every technological means at their disposal. Unlike Eagle Eye, Enemy of the State isn’t about a supercomputer using networked technology. Instead it is focused on the power of the NSA to track and affect people’s digital information such as bank accounts, credit cards, things of that nature. The obvious theme of Enemy of the State is that agencies like the NSA are extremely powerful and that if people abused that power than the average citizen will be faced with serious problems. Another obvious theme in the movie is that people should resist the encroachment of new surveillance measures before it gets too late. But there is a Subliminal Theme, and that is that once you have been detected by the system as a threat, your entire life is completely vulnerable. So the Subliminal Theme motivates the viewer to not anger the system in which we dwell. In the movie, Will Smith’s character didn’t comply with the desires of the agency that was following him and his entire financial life got turned upside down. This Subliminal Theme of basically, “BE GOOD” is completely reinforced by Eagle Eye and expanded upon to be, “BE GOOD, BE AFRAID, and STAY CONNECTED.”
