Get Ready for a Surprise – Total Recall is a total trip

I love the movie, Total Recall. It is quite simply one of the most violent, pulse-pounding, intriguing and mind-tripping action movies that I have ever seen. If you haven’t seen this movie before, and you like action movies, then you need to get this on NetFlix or just buy it. Total Recall is about a construction worker named Quaid, who wants to travel to Mars. But his wife doesn’t want to go to Mars because there is unrest there and she would rather visit the rings of Saturn. This is a science fiction movie. Well what happens is that Quaid decides to compromise with himself. And he ends up going to a clinic where he is able to “Rekall” a trip to Mars without really going there. The clinic attempts to implant memories into Quaid’s mind and that’s when the story really starts to get interesting. You see, the whole movie plays with the notion of what is reality. You don’t really know throughout the movie if Quaid is really experiencing life, or is he just remembering some implanted memories.

The action in Total Recall is top notch. There is hand-to-hand combat, shooting, people getting exploded due to pressure from a change in atmosphere, people getting drilled until they squirt blood everywhere and die, people getting used as human shields (always a plus), and arms getting chopped off by fast moving elevators. This movie has got it all. It is rated “R” and it originally was given an “X” rating due to its intense violence (thanks to Wikipedia for that tidbit of information). The reason why I like the action in this movie so much is because the attacks really seem to connect. It doesn’t matter if you are watching someone get hit by a punch or a gunshot. It really looks like someone got hit. I bet we can thank the director, Paul Verhoeven for the tightness of the action. He directed awesome movies like, Robocop and Starship Troopers. There is one scene where Quaid gets attacked near a concrete wall and it is awesome. At this point in the movie you have no idea that Quaid knows how to fight and he totally destroys a bunch of goons. The action is so well timed that it really feels like you are in the middle of a fight-or-die situation, where any false move could mean your demise. There is another scene where Quaid is being shot at in an airport and Quaid takes an innocent bystander that was accidentally shot by a bad guy, and uses that bystander as a human shield. It is my favorite human shield scene in an action movie of all time.

Implant Machine

Memory Implant Machine

The settings in Total Recall are excellent. The clinic where he is about to get a memory implant is amazing looking. It looks like a futuristic clinic on the outside, but in the back room there is this huge machine that you back your head into. It is really colorful and it definitely looks like something from the future. Mars is very cool looking. There are domes everywhere and it looks dingy and there are convincing rock formations and tunnels. It never feels like the characters are on a set. They always feel like they are in the moment, and you believe what is going on. The interior of the mine at the end of the movie is amazing. There are huge pieces of technology that are supposed to heat the ice and they look like giant ancient Lego blocks. Also there are large TV Monitors in Quaid’s house back on Earth that take up the whole wall. It is cool because that is the flat-screen technology that TV’s have been moving toward for the past few years. The cars in the movie are angular and look like they’re from the future. And there is a tracking device that the bad guys use that totally looks like a modern GPS tracker – iPhone sized. It’s cool seeing how science fiction from 1990 translate into modern technology.

Even though the action and the settings in Total Recall are tremendously stupendous, the real thing that you need to see this movie for, is the trippy plot and mind-bending story. I am not going to go into detail on what the story arch is because you be mad at me for ruining it for you. But what I will do is tell you that there are plenty of twists and abrupt turns in the story that make you feel like you are on a fast-paced ride. If you are the kind of person who likes to be surprised by movies then you will probably love Total Recall. There is double-crosses, back-stabbings, girls with three breasts (no joke), and dwarfs with real attitude. At times it will get fuzzy on who Quaid really is. This is done really well so it is exciting and interesting instead of confusing. The story keeps you guessing, but it doesn’t really feel like a mystery. It is more of an action thrill-ride.

Arnold does a perfect acting job for his portrayal of Quaid. He is very believable and his physical strength makes you accept the high-power moves that he uses against his enemies. There are some classic one-liners in the film, and I personally liked them more than the one-liners in other Schwarzenegger movies like Predator. The actor who plays the main Villain Boss (Ronny Cox), is funny and detestable. Ronny Cox acts with supreme skill and really satisfies the viewer.

Total Recall is a good addition to any action movie collection because it is so good, watching it multiple times is expected. There are so many parts that stick out as awesome that you will probably watch the movie for a certain part and then end up sitting through the entire thing, even though you have most likely already watched the movie multiple times.

Use the power of the Gaze to harness energy for your goals

The Gaze

Harness the power of the Gaze to achieve your goals

We are powerful entities. The only problem is that sometimes it is hard to utilize that power in order to achieve goals. We lead such busy lives and it seems that every new invention that is supposed to make life easier just ends of sucking up more of our time. We have goals that are sometimes simple and easily achievable and other times very lofty and require a tremendous amount of energy to attain. There is a way to achieve our goals with greater ease but it requires using more energy than we normally have access to. What I am talking about is using the Gaze in order to harness energy and attain goals. What is the Gaze? The Gaze is a mixture of the focus, attention, intent, interest, and willingness to participate of a sentient being or group of beings. An example of the Gaze is when someone wants to do something like creating a mural in a city, let’s call him Joe. So creating the mural in the city would be the goal. And Joe desiring to create the mural would Gaze at the goal of the mural by putting his intent and energy into creating the mural. But that is the Gaze of only one person. Let’s say that Joe had thirty friends and acquaintances some of them were interested in art. Well at that moment the Gaze of those friends and acquaintances would be unfocused and the energy intensity would be minimal. The people are probably talking to each other about their plans for the weekend, what they ate for dinner, their favorite movies, they aren’t looking at his Mural Project. They just aren’t focused on the Mural Project. So what Joe needs to do is focus and center the Gaze of his friends and acquaintances. One way that he could chose to do this would be to create some kind of event where people could meet and work on the mural and have a fun time in the process. Let’s say he chose to advertise this event on Facebook and invite his friends as guests to work on the mural. This is a great way to attract the Gaze of his friends and focus it on his mural. But for some reason when the day finally came not many people showed up to work on Joe’s mural. Why did that happen? Everything seemed to be working so well. In the next section we will discuss how the Gaze wasn’t actually as strong as he thought it was.

The Gaze is like a beam of light. It can be warm and soft like the light that cracks through the trees while you are sleeping on the grass on a summer’s day. Or it can be thin and focused like a laser beam that can slice through diamonds and solder neurons together. But in order to have a laser-beam like Gaze it takes work. In our example with Joe’s mural. He tried to focus the Gaze of his friends on his goal in order to make it a reality, but he was missing a few things. First of all, the Gaze and reputation are inseparable. Reputation is huge in trying to gain the attention of people. If people are generally dismissive of you, it will be very challenging to get their serious attention on your goals. And why do we need the Gaze of other people to help us achieve our personal goals? The answer is simple, the more powerful the Gaze is on you the faster you will see results for your objectives. Now granted, this may not always be a good thing. In many cases you may find that the Gaze can cause problems for you if you are trying to do covert things in secrecy. Or if you have a tendency to self-sabotage then the Gaze of others may be frustrating because you don’t actually want their help. But if you are living a generally transparent lifestyle and you don’t mind being public with your desires and your life, you will find that an intense Gaze can be extremely encouraging and empowering. This is because if you are like Joe, and you want to do something that requires the work of multiple people like his mural, if you can attract their interest quickly you will increase the probability that the mural will be a success. But in Joe’s case, he didn’t have that great of a reputation of getting things done. In fact, most of his friends thought of him to be a flake. So when he created his mural event, many of his friends thought that the event would be boring and non-fun. Others doubted that the event would exist at all. And other friends thought that they would be stuck with all the work. So this brings me to an important point. The Gaze is powered by reputation and relevance. And powering the battery that is creating that beam of energy takes work. Building a reputation is a series of tiny successes that get people to know something about you. In Joe’s case, since you can’t build a reputation over night, he would probably have to create his mural event and make triple-sure that the few people that did actually come to the event were well taken care of. He would need to make sure that from now on, his ideas were going to be something for his friends to remember and something that people were, “Missing out on” if they weren’t there.

An example of someone who has the Gaze shining on them intently right now would be the superstar known as Lady Gaga. She is a Pop Singer and Dancer and Songwriter who I’ve noticed is all over XM radio. I was in the car with a friend and literally every 3-5 songs that we skipped through on the different channels were a Lady Gaga song. Lady Gaga is having her songs covered by many artists. Jared Leto’s band recently did a cover of “Bad Romance” and some kid in grade school is getting hundreds of thousands of hits on his YouTube video of his cover of “Paparazzi.” Basically, people are focused on Lady Gaga right now. They are listening to her music and emulating her. Some people are even inspired by her fashion sense. Well in order for Lada Gaga to have attracted the Gaze of so many people she worked very hard on cultivating her image and her sound. Lady Gaga didn’t always wear such unique outfits as she does now. In fact I have seen pictures that you can look at as well by clicking here, that show her old style. The reason why I am bringing this up is because it takes a great deal of work to find out what your niche style should be that will attract the Gaze that you want in order to achieve your goals. In the next section we will be discussing how to build the Gaze.

The way to attract the Gaze onto yourself is to work at it every day. It doesn’t matter if you want the attention on helping baby seals in the ocean, or if you are trying to be the next pop star sensation, or if you are simply trying to make more friends and have an exciting life. If you don’t work at it every day, you will be missing out on building your momentum. And momentum is a key element of the Gaze. I’m tired of talking about Joe so now I’m going to tell you a little about myself and this website and how I’ve used the gaze in order to make it grow. You see, in the beginning, overidon.com was a very small and infrequently visited website. It had some numerous and interesting videos and articles on it, but at the time in 2004 I had no real goal or idea how to attract attention to the site. So I told people via word of mouth about the site and what it was about. This was a great start, but the problem was that I only rarely updated the materials on the site, and it looked like a static web-page rather than a living website. Well, overidon.com went through many changed and then eventually in 2009 I decided to transform overidon.com from a blog talking about my current projects, into a living and breathing blog that discussed everything from video games, to movie reviews, to music reviews, to product reviews, to social commentary, and contemplations and observations of the many facets of life in general. So I blogged almost every day about stuff, and I would post links to my articles on my Facebook wall. So friends who were keeping tabs on their activity stream may have a small probability chance to see my posts. Well guess what happened? Not that many people visited my site. Now, this wasn’t because my articles weren’t good, or because telling people about the articles on Facebook was a bad idea. I wasn’t getting a lot of hits because of an important aspect of the Gaze.

There is a time differential when you do something to attract the Gaze and when you actually get the attention of people. This time differential can be frustrating at first. We all would prefer to see instantaneous results for the work that we put into things. But what happened in the case of overidon.com, was that it took time for my articles to show up in Google searches. And it also took time for people to see enough of my articles on their Facebook activity streams for them to actually decide to click on a link and read an article. Well, what happened was that after a few weeks I was noticing that more people were visiting my website. And my goal was to have overidon.com become a fun website that people would want to visit often. But one problem happened. I didn’t always have something to talk about everyday. Or even worse, I didn’t always have the motivation to write every day. This problem got even worse a few months later when I got pancreatitis. I was unable to blog because I was sick, and when I finally got out of the hospital I lost a tremendous amount of momentum. To make things worse, I looked at the visitor statistics for the site and there were a lot less visitors. Well, a few weeks later I decided to start blogging again. And I made a pact with myself to try and blog every day. I didn’t succeed in blogging every day at first. But I was writing much more frequently than before. And to my surprise many more people started visiting the site. It was very encouraging, so instead of taking a break and relishing my victory, I decided to blog even more in order to satiate the desire of my readers. And what happened was that more and more people started to visit the site. Since there were more articles, more visitors were finding overidon.com from organic searches. And since I was writing almost every day, more people were coming back to visit the site because it was beginning to have a reputation of having consistent content. Now according to Google Analytics, overidon.com has grown from a small blog, to a medium sized website. This is because I was able to successfully harness the Gaze. So I have used the Gaze to encourage me to write every day in actuality, many days multiple articles. And now we even have a comedy series of stories in the “Original Writing” section. So the Gaze has become fuel in itself rather than a goal. And by providing content that I feel proud of, I have been able to maintain the Gaze of many visitors to overidon.com. So now that I have reached my original goal of having overidon.com become a popular website for people to visit. I have modified that goal, so now I want overidon.com to be a fun website to visit for thousands of people per day. And in order for overidon.com to reach that goal, I am going to need to make sure to create new and interesting content every day in order to maintain the attention of visitors and to attract new friends who will make the viewership grow.

So now you may be thinking, “How can I get the Gaze to work for me?” And my answer is, “You need to work for the Gaze, every day, and believe in what you are doing.” If you can feel good about what you are doing, let it be art, writing, music, engineering, sales, social networking or anything else…and if you can work on it every day. You will attract the Gaze, it just may take a while. The key is to enjoy the process of your work and let other people know that you are having a good time working on either your hobbies or your work. If people know that you are having a good time, people will become more interested in what you are doing. It really is that simple. If your hobbies are a chore to you, don’t expect people to jump on their couches in anticipation for your next story of monotony. But once you get into a good groove, and you feel comfortable working on your hobbies and goals every day, and you share your life with others. People will start to care, and your friends will encourage you, especially if they truly are good friends. One thing to remember, is that many people will think they are giving you the, “Realistic” point of view by discouraging you from your dreams and goals. It really isn’t their fault that people do that. So don’t take it too seriously. People can be negative about lofty goals in general because so many people don’t follow through on them. But the key is to choose an objective and stick to it. Don’t do it because you want to prove others wrong. That’s a weak point of view and it won’t sustain you in the long run. Follow your dreams because you want to prove yourself right. Do it because you want to improve your life. And if you stick to that you will eventually attract the Gaze of many supporters and people who want to see your goals become a reality.

Strider for the NES is a killer action game

Strider (NES)

Click the picture for facts about Strider (NES)

There were many 2D side-scrolling action games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) but one game in particular combined action elements with role-playing skill upgrades as well as an evolving plot with mystery and adventure. This game is called, Strider. It is a killer game. In this game you play a character named Strider Hiryu. Your character is a powerful Ninja-Secret Operative who carries a big sword. You get your missions from the control room in your orbiting base called the “Blue Dragon” (Thanks to Wikipedia for that tidbit of information). It is cool because the control room looks like something out of an Anime or high budget science fiction movie. When you use your sword it makes a slash-effect that cuts enemies that are in front of you. You can slash very quickly so if there is an enemy that takes more than one hit, you can slash repeatedly and dispatch them pretty fast. Also when you kill enemies there are usually cool death animations like exploding blood splotches, or else the enemy can fly backward a ways. You can also stab enemies by holding up on the control pad. I didn’t find myself using this move very much until the end of the game where you need to do it in order to use your fireball combo attack.

The gameplay is probably the best part of Strider. You can slide under things, triple jump across walls, jump into transport tubes. And later in the game you can even get some magnetic boots at walk on walls. You don’t have a tremendous amount of health points. So you need to be careful when getting into combat with enemies. I usually find myself ducking a lot in order to avoid gunfire and waiting and watching for enemy patterns in order to choose the best time to strike. But in some cases the best thing to do is just avoid combat all together by jumping over bad guys (which you can do if you get enough momentum down a hill and jump at the appropriate time). Your slide is a great way to get underneath small areas, also it can be used to dodge enemy fire when timed properly. Strider is realistic in the sense that you can’t touch enemies by jumping on them or running into them. If you do so you will get hurt and will bounce backward.

The settings in the game are great. Each level is a different part of the Earth. You can fight in the dark, Sci-Fi urban areas of Kazah, and also visit the deserts and pyramids of Egypt. Strider does a great job of making each level look different. And if you explore each stage completely, you will encounter people that will talk to you and give you information that you need in order to complete your mission. Sometimes talking to people will also give you special abilities or computer disks which you use to visit new areas. You also can LEVEL UP by talking to people and that increases your health points and energy points. It is very rewarding from a gaming perspective to talk to people in the game because it gives you a short break from the action and it makes you really feel like you are in a mysterious situation doing the work of a ninja.

There are passwords that you use to save your progress in the game. And this is a good thing because the game is pretty long. It takes more than a few hours to beat it. The levels have multiple areas and the dialogue parts take some time. Even though you get to use passwords to save your game, I recommend playing this game when you have a good amount of time on your hands. This is because if you are pretty good at action games you will do well fighting through the stages and will want to proceed on your adventure without stopping. Strider is a compelling game that flows well from area to area. Even though there is a decent amount of exploring in each stage, you will find yourself completing your objectives without a whole lot of frustration. And fighting bosses and difficult areas pumped my adrenaline a great deal and it made me want to play the game more and more.

Vampire Hunter D is a Violent and Genius Anime

Vampire Hunter D

Click the picture to learn about Vampier Hunter D the Anime

Vampire Hunter D is a movie that has a special place in my heart. I first saw it on the Sci-Fi channel in the early 90’s. The movie surprised me with how detailed the animation was. Also the voice acting was excellent and the story was very cool. This film is a staple for Anime lovers. The main character, D, has such a cool demeanor that sets the tone for a intense movie. The film takes place in the future, after the world has been devastated by a nuclear holocaust. It is so far in the future that mutants and other creatures roam around on the Earth. There are villages of humanity that still exist, and their technology is advanced and yet the villages look old as if they were built in 18th century. The buildings are generally made of stone. They kind of have a Gothic look to them. A cool thing about the movie are the weapons. There is a main female character in the movie called Doris. And she has an awesome electrified whip that probably inspired the Iron-Man character Whiplash. Her whip split into a hydra-like shape and then electrified and did energy damage to her enemies. Vampire Hunter D has a really cool crescent-moon shaped sword. It is razor sharp and can cut most enemies in half with a single slash. He also has special items. He has an item that he only uses once in the movie that is a small blue-ish light on his chest. When he switches it on, it scares away and damages enemy mutants. Doris’ little brother, Dan, has a large laser rifle that fires in concentrated bursts. It can hurt both people and non-corporeal creatures, list mist-monsters. Mist-monsters float in the air and they like to eat people and cattle.

One major reason why you should watch Vampire Hunter D, is that it is extremely immersive and you will feel like you are part of the dark futuristic universe. There is this one scene that takes place before Vampire Hunter D and Doris enter the town. It basically shows the setting and landscape of the village and outlying natural views. This scene is very intimate and I remember how I felt when I first watched it. There were children singing and a church-bell was ringing in the distance. I felt the cool dead wind brush past my cheeks. I felt the somber despair that the people endured in order to survive so long. Whenever Vampire Hunter D enters a new area the art is simply amazing. There are scenes when D is riding his horse through the wastelands and it is breathtaking.

This movie is violent. There are scenes where Vampire Hunter D slices this one monster dude in half and you can see all of his internal organs in a cross-section and then they all spill out. It is nasty. There is another part where D stabs a giant in the tongue and cuts his head and shoulder off. The amount of blood that sprays out is immense. Before the final battle between D and the villain of the movie, Count Magnus Lee, there is a short part where another character tries to attack the count. This character has white hair and uses these cool flying blades as weapons. Anyway, he tries to use this enchanted incense candle to stun the Count but the Count uses his telekinetic powers to put out the candle. Then the Count picks this dude up in the air with his mind like Darth Vader or something and then smashes the guy against the metal pillars in the castle. Finally the Count smashes the guy and then concentrates and then makes the dude’s head explode. Head parts fly all over the place and it is a real mess. And the count says something like, “I haven’t had fun like this in ages.” Yeah, so basically this movie is not for young kids.

There are many lines of wisdom in Vampire Hunter D. The hero talks to Dan about what it is to be grown up. And this demon entity that is trapped in D’s hand often reflects on D’s humanity. He challenges D by questioning his motivations with Doris. Also D’s hand brings up part of D’s struggle between his vampiric ways and his humanity. The voice acting is superb in this movie. I love the voices of all the characters in both the English, and Japanese versions. There is a super famous voice actor who does the voice of D. His name is Michael McConnohie, he has done the voice of Shin in the awesome Anime, “Fist of the North Star.” This voice actor is amazing and he really captures the essence of D.

If you are looking for a violent and semi-romantic vampire Anime, then Vampire Hunter D is great. This movie is definitely worth adding to your Queue on Netflix.
