Blogging is a lot of fun. But nothing makes the typing go by faster than having good music pumping in through your ears. I’ve been a fan of an artist/DJ called 4TrakZ for over a year now. I loved his music ever since I heard Escape. That song has a uniqueness that takes you back to the 80’s with it distorted vocals and grinding guitar stabs. But for some reason or another I didn’t check my MySpace account and I missed out on 4TrakZ for a while. 4TrakZ is from France and his music is truly international. Most of the songs have English vocals but have a slap bass feel that you can only find among the best French artists like Danger. His music is well categorized as electro/experimental and pop. This makes sense because you can hear the programming come trough. The pop side of the music is apparent by 4TrakZ’s distinct use of structure to push a song into your head. His best tracks are equipped with breakdowns and bridges made of synthesized plastic. (The kind of stuff you might find on 4TrakZ’s armor)

When I checked to see what 4TrakZ was up to last week on MySpace I was blown away. Not only does he have a new EP coming out the 13th of August 2009 but he has tons of new remixes on his MySpace. One such mix is the Bestrack Sunset City MegaMix. This MegaMix seriously is melting my brain. I have listened to it over 70 times on headphones. It is literally addictive music. The mix opens up with some low moody bass and ambient sounds of train tracks only to be accompanied by hand drums. Then the vocals kick in and keep the upbeat track in position until it splits into a small buildup at 1 minute 46 seconds. At this point your ears are jazzed up with precise stereo tiny lines of synth patterns. The polyphony is beautiful and it brings the listener inside the pocket quite nicely. The patterns have a vocal “talking” feel that makes you want to listen closely to the rhythm because it has something to say subconsciously.

At 2 minutes and 32 seconds there is a rad breakdown as the female vocalist sets a countdown timer that goes up to nine then hits zero and the BesTrack bomb gets dropped. Bass lines of slap goodness enter from the left channel and lay down the beat. Then the song hits a real intense finale at about 4 minutes. An underwater sounding lead takes your ears on an adventure through a wall of sound.

If you haven’t already, you need to visit 4TrakZ on MySpace right now and listen to Espace and the Bestrack Sunset City MegaMix!  Don’t forget to visit Bestrack on MySpace as well, the music there is sick!

Kura Sushi's Interior

Kura Sushi's Interior

A few weeks ago I went to a revolving sushi restaurant in Costa Mesa called Kura Sushi to eat with my dad. The sushi tastes good and the prices are more than reasonable. Kura Sushi has a wide selection of fish to choose from and it also has the standard teriyaki dishes that one would expect to find at any Japanese Restaurant. What makes Kura Sushi fun is that it uses a revolving conveyor belt system to distribute the sushi. The conveyor belt even brings the sushi to the tables that are detached from the sushi bar! I am personally a bit leery of revolving sushi places because I always wonder how fresh the food is. But at Kura Sushi you can have any dish that is on the conveyor belt made fresh by the sushi chefs by asking your waiter. Of course you have to wait for the food to be prepared if you ask for the chefs to make it special, but the wait is well worth it.

The sushi comes on color coded plates that determine the price. For example, nigiri tuna sushi (maguro) is $2.25! That’s a really good price for sushi. The slices of sushi are slightly smaller than other sushi restaurants that I’ve been to, but the quality is good. I was at Maki Maki Japanese Restaurant in Irvine Spectrum today and the maguro sushi was lager cuts than Kura Sushi, but at Maki Maki the maguro tasted stringy and didn’t have as good of texture that I’d expect to get at Kura Sushi. My dad likes to take the sushi directly from the conveyor belt. He says that the quality and freshness is fine and he likes it. I researched how the quality system works at Kura Sushi, and it seems they use a computer controlled freshness system. There is a computer that scans an identification tag on each plate and it automatically discards the sushi if it has been circulating too long.

The staff at Kura Sushi in Costa Mesa are quite friendly and they are fast to get your order. I always got my tea filled up promptly by my server and they were quick to bring extra ginger root or wasabi. Now an experience at Kura Sushi is way mellower than at Tokyo Delves Sushi Bar. The price is a lot lower also. You can have a filling meal for two at Kura Sushi for about $12-$15 per person. At Tokyo Delves it will cost you about $30 per person if you aren’t drinking alcohol and $50 or more if you are. At Maki Maki sushi today I spent $30 plus tip for a sushi dinner and I felt like I would have much rather been at Kura Sushi. The chef’s at Kura Sushi are all Asain looking and that’s actually a big deal at a Japanese Restaurant. Why? Well when I was at Maki Maki, I got laughed at when I called my sushi chef “Victor San” hahaha! I thought it was kind of funny myself. J I guess I’m used to high quality sushi restaurants that have authentic chefs. The only bad part was that I think I embarrassed “Victor” the sushi chef who clearly didn’t look Asian at all. How was I supposed to know you’re only supposed to use the title “San” if the chef looked Asian? Regardless, if you go to Kura Sushi you will probably find yourself being served up sushi by Asian chefs. I’ve also tried the teriyaki beef specials at Kura Sushi and they taste good and are affordable $7.95 for lunch and $9.95 for dinner. You get tempura and a meat item. Although I definitely recommend that you try their sushi over their cooked food. So try Kura Sushi and have fun with their revolving sushi bar yourself!

ME ICON The Sun Never Shines in London Compelling Track!

So I was sitting at cha For Tea sipping on some King’s Oolong Hot Tea, when I decided to browse my MySpace account for some music. I ended up picking a band called ME ICON.

ME ICON is a duo that makes electronically produced music. They are from London and one track that got my attention was called, “The Sun Never Shines in London.” This song is really compelling, because it grabs the listener subtly. “The Sun Never Shines in London” opens by enticing your ears with soft sounds of city streets, cars vrooming by, and footsteps. Then the song has some drums matched by synths on the crescendo. The drums then break into a driving beat. This gives the song a marching feel, like you are walking somewhere to the rhythm.

Next the vocals kick in. The vocals in “The Sun Never Shines in London” are very mellow and easy to listen to. They use a cool effect that makes each word sound distant yet easy to absorb. Not all the words in the song can be picked out, but the vibe is clear enough to enjoy.  At 1:59 there is a chord change that takes the song into a major sounding progression. This part sounds beautiful and the vocals really shine along with the music. The song has a very memory inducing feel that makes one feel nostalgic of the past and hopeful toward the future. This reminiscence is drawn out of the listener by the chill stereo effects and melancholy strings.
